I value you guy's imput and opinions so I figure I'll ask. I just ordered my son the HOWA 1500 Black Houge package. It's a .223 with a scope and bipod and threaded barrel. Being that he's only 6 and a little rifle shy, I want to do everything possible to keep him comfortable and excited to keep shooting... With that being said, I consider my self behind on the times as I've never had any dealings with muzzle breaks or anything like that and honestly, don't know where to begin! So what's the word on a quality muzzle break? Will it help him with the recoil? Is there anything else I could do to help get the rifle to where it needs to be?

JMHO - There won't be enough recoil on a heavy 223 to be worth adding all that noise for. I don't even really have to shoulder my Tikka T3x Varmint 223.

I agree. However, if you do decide you must have a brake, Midway has some AR Stoner brakes for not much money.

How about a little time with a well-fitting .22 to get over the shyness? From there, I wouldn't think the heavy .223 would be much of a leap.

A lot of the time it is the muzzle blast more so than recoil that bothers kids,

A proper fitting stock will go a long way in reducing felt recoil as will a good recoil pad on the well fitted stock.

Yeah I've had him shooting my little 22 for a year or so and it will def help. He's already told me he's alittle scared to make the jump so I just wanna help any way I can.

Dry fire , stock pack, no muzzle brake

I think the super loud report is sometimes the biggest factor with little shooters

If you do, consider a linear compensator. It directs noise and blast down range. There are a number available, like the DPMS Levang model, several from Kaw Valley and Simple Threaded Devices.

Good luck.

Like others have said, I wouldn't put a muzzle break. The sound will do more to cause him to be trigger shy than the recoil on that gun.

Honestly, I would buy a suppressor. They are the greatest thing ever for rifles and I will never shoot again without one. The recoil and sound reduction make shooting infinitely more fun, especially for a kid.

Pretty much this. Hes 6, not a porcelain doll, and its a .223. A muzzle brake would add a lot of noise for minimal reduction in recoil, because .223 doesnt recoil that much.

If he is shy with the 22, it may be the sound that is the problem. Try using ear plugs and ear muffs together.

Like some have said make sure the stock fits and with the heavy barrel recoil should not be a factor. You can also get managed/reduced recoil ammo and a suppressor which acts some what as a muzzle brake while muffling the sound. Also you can have a good recoil pad installed.

Just take your time and go slow and build his confidence, he will come around.

I think the weight will be an issue unless he only shoots off a bench. Going to be a fairly heavy gun with scope for a young 6 yo lad to hold steady shooting off hand. JMO

A 10/22 is going to be too heavy for offhand shooting. I think the Howa will be fine to get the youngster used to a full sized rifle; and one he can use to shoot a deer or hog with at a reasonable range.

I guess I'm the odd one out. I like a brake on everything I have for recoil mitigation and to see bullet impact on target.
A brake normally doesn't affect the shooter, just everyone else around him.
Impact precision makes caliber specific brakes that are very good. Now days I run APA mini fat bastards.

I forgot my ears muffs the couple of weeks ago while hunting pigs. My 300 WM has a break and when I shot a pig I think I may have caused some permanent hearing damage. My left ear is still ringing and crackly. If you go with the break, make sure he always wears hearing protection even when hunting.

I like breaks and have them on a couple rifles but I think the muzzle blast will cause more flinch than the recoil of a 223.

Looks like it's agreed that a muzzle break is out of the equation. And yes, I ALWAYs provide him with ear muffs when he's around shooting.

About the suppressor... I forgot to throw that into my initial question. Can some one shoot me some feedback? Isn't there paper work and lot's of extra bs involved? Could one be installed on this Pre threaded factory barrel?

My buddy got an AR before me, kept telling to me to get one with a longer barrel because 16" was just too loud. I got a couple different ones with A2 flash hiders, no real big deal, didn't think the blast was that bad. A while later we were at the lease and I grabbed his to see how it shot, it had a brake, holy smokes that sucker was loud.

Brakes suck unless you need them, I like linear comps. Much easier on the ears. I hunt regularly without ear protection(stupid I know, already have tinitis and old habits hard to break). Can run through 10-12 rds in a hunting situation with my 300blk w/ Troy Claymore and doesn't bother me. Course I'm deaf already so take that for what its worth.....

We didn't use hearing protection when I was a kid, maybe a couple cigarette butts if it was time to sight in. Never thought much about it. My kids are smarter than me. Every one of them has been shot around without protection and they do not like it. They like to take plugs to the stand, to the dove patch, etc.

Shoot. Eat. Repeat.

This compensator really has my attention now. Since it's so close to a suppressor, do you have to go through the same pain staking paper work or just buy one and hook it up??

Linear comps do not reduce the sound, they just redirect it down range. There are no extra restrictions on their use.

Silencers do reduce the sound and require you apply to ATFE (with $200) for approval before you can take possession.

If your barrel is already threaded, either option is simple to attach.

Good luck
