I need to ship a rifle out of state to a gunsmith. Can I ship it myself, directly to the gunsmith or do I need a local FFL to ship it for me to the gunsmith?

Thanks.

You can ship it. Nothing special, I'd go FedEx or UPS.

Thanks Judd.

In case you're wondering, no, it's not the Sako desperately awaiting the muzzle brake we talked about *months* ago! It's a Browning BLR going to get a trigger job.

I've used USPS more than a few times to ship long guns out of state to a FFL with no hitches or problems, except for one local Post Master who could not read or understand his own USPS Regulations. FWIW I always ship any firearm by any carrier insured, with a tracking # and without any exterior identifying information or the receiving destination that would suggest the contents was a long gun.

Yep, you can't ship one out of Burleson post office because they cannot read either.

As long as the gun smith has an FFL, then yes, you can ship it direct to him. Include a copy of his FFL inside the rifle case, and you are good. USPS, FedEX, UPS, whatever works. I use UPS. USPS will be the cheapest, and take the longest. FedEx often has strange firearms shipment rules, so I avoid them.

All good info folks, thanks. Yes, the gunsmith has an FFL.

There seems to be too few respected/recommended/competent - even willing - gunsmiths to work on the BLR action. "The" guy is in PA.

I know people not too far away from this gunsmith and will be visiting soon. So my plan is to ship it, have the work done and then bring the rifle home on my return flight.

I still haven't had mine done either. At this point, I think I'm just going to wait and see if I don't end up with a lathe (thinking I need one) and do it myself.

Also, I stated not using USPS for the same reason WC said he never had the problem but once...it just takes once to make me not want to live through that again wink The incompetence in that organization is fairly high, I just don't need the headache.

I cant speak as highly about FedEx, Ive had damaged boxes, issues, and even a lost package with them. Their insurance is a falsehood they use to make more money but not actually pay back when they F up, and they will.

USPS and UPS have been fine with me.
