WSM or HMR? Which one and why?

You can’t go wrong with the savage heavy barrel 17 HMR. That thing is extremely accurate. I can hit squirrels at 75-100 yards with it.

I've been shooting HMR and love it. Kinda like a .22 Mag but I was able to get HMR ammo as it is available. Does a number on 'coon and various other small varmints, some use it on close range hogs. My CZ 455 heavy is a laser with any CCI.17 loads they produce, similar accuracy results with Hornady. It's just a fun rifle /cartridge combo. I dont have any experience with WSM.

A good buddy has a HMR and loves it. I am leaning towards the HMR but have seen a number of posts on the WSM and want to better understand the difference and which one folks on here think is the better of the two...

never shot the WSM. I have an HMR recommended by my brother a few years ago. They are very accurate.

HMR - better ammo availability, and at the distances where a WSM would be useful, the 17 cal bullets are being blown all over the place.

I love them both. The HMR is a fun accurate little gun, been shooting pigs/yotes/feral dogs/coons with it for years. I have a new Savage WSM in the safe right now that is about to get scoped and put to use. The only reason I wanted the WSM is because it's hotter than the HMR.

My savage .17 HMR is a tack driver. I do not know much about the WSM but I love that little HMR. It has a cheap scope on it too.

I'd stick with the HMR as ammo is much easier to find. The WSM has a little better ballistics and less wind drift due to a higher dose of powder. WSM is around 3000fps and HMR is around 2550fps in the same grain projectile. But finding ammo for the WSM is a little harder. Even during then "ammo scare" .17HMr was still on the shelves and at normal pricing.

I have a Mossberg .17HMR I picked up at Academy a few years back for $180. Has been a great gun and very consistent shooter. Coons, bobcats and squirrels all agree on the accuracy and stopping power. All around 75 - 85 yards. grin

see through people's BS gets much better.

Under 100 yards on coyote or smaller critters get an HMR, they are wonderful!

We shoot prarie dogs every summer. We’ve got 2 savage rifles in HMR, and one WSM . The hmr is awesome compared to 22mag. The wsm is badazz. Shoots flat.....period. Cost about the same to buy ammo . But wsm does occasionally split a case in the chamber, causing minor inconvenience of lightly forcing bolt open . You won’t be disappointed in either. If I could only pick one , I’d go wsm

I’ve never had problems finding ammo for either, but it could just be luck . Use @1000rnds of each every year . Or boys do anyway ...

HMR. Good reasons listed already.

I have both and the HMR hasn't seen day light in two years. The WSM is a daily truck gun.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.
