I've been putting in for a variety of drawn hunts for the past couple years and scored my first one this year: the Antlerless Deer Permit at Alabama Creek WMA. I haven't been out to that area yet, but plan to go on a first scouting trip in the next week or so. Any tips on this area? From what I've read it looks like a lot of hunters will be in that area. I'm thinking I may go spend a few days mid-week hunting a little later in the season since it is an antlerless tag anyway. Excited to get out and put in some work on this public hunt. Only other public hunting I've done was at Benbrook when I was drawn. Thanks for any advice!

Be sure and go to the Safety Orientation which is the first day listed on your Permit.

My son and I spent 9 days total there last season. We also won ADP's. Lots of tracks but no deer. I recommend a pre-season scouting trip and a handheld GPS. Pick 5 or 6 spots you like and mark them. We stayed on the southern side of the property as is was our first time.

Good Luck

Thanks for the tips, atexan. Planning a scouting trip! I'm going to give it a shot and see what I can do. Did you guys go with a tree stand or pop-up?

Thanks for the tip; the permit said nothing about a safety orientation. Giving them a call about it today.

Following this one. I drew an anterless tag, too. I don't believe there's an orientation required for this one but I could be wrong.

There is NO orientation involved... you find a place to hunt and hunt it. Both pop ups and stands have their advantages and disadvantages. If you hunt in a climber, either cable and lock it, or take it with you...theives aren't BAD, but a climbing stand is gold. You CANNOT bait and during the first weekend, they set up a deer check Station which is mandatory if you harvest a deer of any size or sex. I would suggest cleaning ANY corn you have out of your vehicle if you bait where you currently hunt. A new game warden transferred in and he's a real prick. The Canine Warden Sam and the other Warden Randy are really great guys as long as you're doing the right thing....

Anyone have any luck so far? Thinking of heading down in the next week or two. I've never been there.

Opening weekend seemed quieter than normal. I saw a few folks with deer but not as many as before. Also, I didn't hear as many gun shots. Tough place to hunt.

Go to the Forest service road past the boys camp road. Follow the road till it dead ends. This will be at the river. Park and go upriver maybe a quarter mile. There will be a slough and pin oak flat there. I squirrel hunt the area and always see deer in the area. Good luck to you. Dan

If you DO go that way, the road number isn't marked, BUT it's the first one on the left past FS road 5101, Better have 4x4 to get there. Since the rains, the holes near the lake have gotten DEEP thanks to everyone playing in them. Opening weekend WAS the quietest I've heard in my 3 years there. In unrelated news, if any of you are the jackwagon who put your climber up 10 yards from my blind on double food plots on 509, Better be glad my buddy came to hunt it that morning instead of me....I'd have given you a class in hunted ethics you'd not soon forget....
