Hunting with a friend out in west TX this past weekend and I decided to draw a little range card on the deer stand above the windows. Basically just picked the key features drew a small picture of them and then ranged them for a quick idea on range if you don't have time to range it or for a guest who may hunt it and not know the ranges. No more second guessing or having to remember ranges anymore. Of coarse many places you don't need anything like this bc there aren't many long shots but thought it was a good idea for open country with multiple shot distances ranging from 50-300 plus yards.

Our feeders are all 100 yards give or take so it doesn't matter. Other than that is flat open senderos with no discernable landmarks for further than I would think most would want to or are capable of shooting.

There is one feeder out there I know of that is less than 200 yrs but almost all are atlas 200-250. Mostly hunt from hill tops, ridges, and cliffs overlooking large areas.

I do that all the time. 99% of my hunting is not in a blind so I range different features from a vantage point so if I get a quick shot I don't have to range.

Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

I do this at every blinds on both our properties. I know the distances of everything fairly well, but for those that might not be as comfortable estimating distances, this is a very useful training tool.
I also put survey tape in the trees at 100, 200, and 300 yards on each sendero, or road.
Having a visual marker is just one more good tool in the toolbox, IMO.

We put a white stake every 25 yards at the guest blind.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

Our blinds are covered with my artistic talents... Hint: Always put the ranges above the windows. Putting it below the window will cause the sun to fade it over time...

Unless they are experienced, I would not want them shooting over 125 yards. That being said, at our lease, all shots are 70 to 130 yards.

Something similar, I plan to use a muzzle loader this year. Checked the longer ranges in my pasture and used a marksalot on the inside of the blind.

Great idea, but I don't know that I would trust a "guest" shooting at those distances.

I have an iphone app that works well for this it allows you to measure distances using google satellite images by dropping pins. I mostly use it to confirm how far away an animal was when we spotted them with thermal, but it works awesome in the deer blind as well or any unfamiliar shooting distances. The app is called GPS Tracks.

Great idea, but I don't know that I would trust a "guest" shooting at those distances. There aren't many options under 200 except for one hog feeder setup. Not many guest as is though.

I don't know if that is because it is satellite vs cell tower but that would make sense.

I use a GPS APP in the area where I guide on Ft Hood and if I don't have good reception it only gets me working 50 or so yards of my position with good reception it's 0-5 yards. This is MilGPS.

I set up a new stand two years ago in a fairly open area. I took pictures out of the windows, printed them and posted them over the windows, with distances to major reference points written on them. One less thing to worry about if Buster Big Buck ever shows up.

Sapper, I never have personally, but have been in stands where someone did write distances on dominate features on the blind wall, this was back when RF where not as common as they are now, but it was much appreciated for ranges past the feeders.
Most hunting I do now, there really isn't a reason to write them down, mainly hunting Colorado, here at home my longest shot would be 150yds, so...Going to a new place with the normal Texas setup, I can see it be very useful for folks without a RF hunting a new/unfamiliar place.

Something else I really like for you guys that shoot longer ranges is the built in dope disks for the Vortex Defender scope caps. The picture below is just sample data, you actually enter your correct dope and arrange it however you want on the website and they print it out and send it to you. Very handy having it immediately available when you flip open the rear cap.
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

I do it even though the deer always come from one of three spots. It's a good reference when someone is hunting my stand
