Just wondering. I see a lot of pics on here but to my knowledge they're not much of a predator to anything that matters. Thoughts?

I think some people kill them to protect turkeys and their chicks. I think most people kill them because they easily come to calls or because there just seems to be too many of them. I have killed 2 but prob won't kill anymore unless a landowner says he wants them killed. I think they are fun to watch. Most are killed in predator competitions.

I have a family of reds at my house, we see them regularly. Also have a large population of cottontails and the foxes dont seem to bother them. I doubt they kill anything much bigger than a rat but could be wrong. I leave them be.

Another reason I see people kill them is because they have chicken coupes.

I shoot raccoons before I shoot foxes.

They get a pass here, along with Bobcats.

I give them a pass.....hogs, ringed-tailed-rats (coons), and coyotes get hammered...

I used to trap grays for fur back in the 80's but now I leave them alone. They are better mousers than coyotes and they leave most everything else alone.

I think its the "got to kill something mentality", imo, I never did. I am not a tree hugger or anything like that, I just enjoy watching wildlife as much as shooting something that I can eat. over the years I have sit and watched more turkey than I ever shot. fox are great for keeping the rodent population down.

No good reason not to either... they are a hardy animal and could cause headaches in the right areas

Six years ago we moved onto a farm in a rural area of central KY. We had an active pair of greys on the farm for about two years but they have disappeared. I'm fairly certain that no one has hunted them. We have lots of coyote in the area. I have heard that coyote will sometimes kill fox to eliminate competition. Has anyone seen evidence of this where you are?

Coyotes will kill and eat gray foxes. If you have a few trees, grays can climb like a cat and escape, if no trees then coyotes will eliminate them.
The only reason that I kill foxes is where we are trying to hunt quail and control the populations so that rabies does not rear its head.
Adios,
Gary

Lost 7 ducks in 7 days to a family of Reds but never had a problem with Grays.

Gary, you sure got that right. Coyotes will wipe fox out. They prey on them especially when there kits, but will kill them and eat them any chance they get.

In West Texas their numbers will get way out of hand if you have a few wet springs. When their populations get up to high it becomes a dangerous situation when a good long drought hits. That's when rabies explodes and you got real problems. Fox and skunks are the larges spreaders of rabies.

Grey fox are prolific. They'll eat and survive on vegetation, insects, rats, mice, birds, rabbits and they can take a small kid goat and fawn town if hungry enough.

They'll put a hurt on quail as well. Students for Texas Tech were collecting all the grey fox they could during the March Big Cat contest for brain core samples. They are doing a rabies study. They expect a big outbreak during the next drought because numbers are so high now.

breadman and I have the same issues. Red's and bob cats used to give me fits. Gray's not so much.
No more....I set up motion activated sprinklers and now they go after my neighbor's chickens.
He want's to know what I did to deter them.....I'll never tell.... grin
