A friend has a spot on a giant ranch in Pecos county. I took care of a rifle build, scope, base, rings purchase, load development, DOPE, and a lesson. I was invited to hunt cow elk with him in return.
The range has a 1700 yard steel range, that we spent all day on, on Tuesday. Another lease member asked me to help him with his .300 RUM. And we shot Bill's 7mm-08 A.I., my 7 Rem Mag, and my 7mm-08 suppressed rental rifle. I found the end of every rifle's super-sonic flight. And managed to get to the last targrt with the .300 RUM.
Wednesday we went out in search of cow elk, driving the massive ranch. Several hours in, we found two cows in an accessible location, for retrieval. They wouldn't stop skirting the face on their side, so the four of us decided to let the truck keep rolling while Bill and I bailed out on foot. The cows were across a canyon that, from our location was a 20' straight drop. There was a zero percentage chance of closing the distance on foot, as it would've taken rope gear to get down, and by then the cows would've been gone. But we knew we could skirt the canyon and get to them in the event of downed animals. So we bailed out, and the truck kept rolling. Bill ranged the back cow for me at 465 yards. The cows had stopped, so I was able to dial correction and fired the 7 Rem Mag at vitals. The back cow took about 4 steps and we lost her behind a juniper. Bill said, hit the other one. I said "range it". He gave me 515 yards. I made the correction while looking at her through the scope. The only visible part of her was head and neck. The wind had laid down, so I felt good about it. I lined up on brain stem and saw her drop straight down, in the scope.
Then the other guys in the group said "that first cow fell, did y'all think you were shooting her again?" Bill did think that, but I believed the second shot was on the second cow. So I filled Bill's quota, and mine, in less than a minute. I apologized to Bill, but he said "I don't care we got the coolers full, I've killed plenty of elk, and you're more reliable that far out anyway".
So all worked out perfectly!
