Doesn't need to be registered if for off highway use. I bought mine while hunting in Colorado, the finance company will get the Certificate of Origin.

I believe they go by the value of the vehicle, then you pay the tax that would be charged at that price. SWAG!!

Although not required, I seem to remember it's still an option to register off-road vehicles, which makes it easier for law enforcement to identify them as stolen, and ensure later buyers the vehicle isn't stolen. I was the third buyer of my old 92 Fourtrax and was able to get a title in my name after the first two buyers registered it after each purchase.

Do All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) need to be registered at the county tax assessors/collectors office before being used at OHV venues located on the public lands of Texas?
" No, ATV registration is no longer required in Texas. Under the provisions of HB3849, TxDOT would no longer register all-terrain vehicles (ATV) for off-highway use; and the $6 registration fee and $6 ATV safety fee would no longer be collected. Titles for ATVs and Motorcycles can still be obtained at your local county tax assessor/collectors office"

DMV.or TX

"Golf carts, ATVs, utility vehicles, and recreational off-highway vehicles (ROVs) are not normally allowed to be driven on public roads and therefore do not qualify to be registered. Some cities do allow for golf carts to travel on certain roads."

UTV needs to be titled in Texas now: http://www.txdmv.gov/motorists/buying-or-selling-a-vehicle/off-highway-vehicles

There is no tax on the title process as of now beside some small fees. Although the dealers in Texas may lie and say otherwise.

If its new you just sign the mso and it should be done for you. I havnt found a finance company that will allow the sell to go through without such already done.

I bought my 2016 Ranger 900 in Kansas when I was up there hunting last year. I tried to get it titled here and the lady told me at the tax off there was no titling for it. I have a title of origin from Polaris. Apparently that's all you need.

UTV's are required to be titled in TX. Golf carts are not, but they are not classified the same. I have a TX Title for my Ranger and if you buy from out of state, you will pay the tax at the time you go to title it.

In other words, it doesn't really pay to buy out of state, as you will end up with the tax at the end of the day when you title it. Me personally, I would not buy a used UTV or ATV without the vehicle having a clean title.

You don't pay tax like you would on a car or boat when titling a UTV from out of state. Just some small fees. Call them and ask.

Logic would say that since you are required to title it in state (see above link), you will pay the tax. I am not sure how you are avoiding it but I would bet the "fees" you are referring to are in fact a tax based on the value of the property.

You can get a title for them but a lot of people don't. Same with four wheelers. Just a hassle. If I bought anything over 4-5k I would want it to have a title though, just to prove ownership in the rare event it is questioned.

Logic doesn't apply here. DOT.GOV Call and ask.

I just bought one out of state and made sure of the tax rules before driving 100 miles to save some money.
