Joined the 300 WM club today. Can anyone share their favorite powder/projectile? Heavy
23 inch 1/10 with factory muzzle break.
I'm kinda leaning towards the 178 ELDX. Powder, no idea.
This is a hunting rifle to be used on Whitetail and Mule deer.
I also love to shoot steel but really not interested in non hunting bullets.

I would go heavier bullet for 300. I would use 178 on 308 or 30-06


I use 7797 on 190 accubond lr

74.4 grains RL-22 and 180 Accubond, at 3,165 for accuracy, .2 to .3 MOA @ 300 yards. I have pushed it to 3,260 fps. max but accuracy was not there.

H1000 and 208 Amax or 212 ELD-X.

190 Nosler Accubond Long Range blems are on sale at Shooter's Pro Shop for half the cost of most other decent bullets. $39/100 The ABLR has a higher bc than the Accubond and the front is softer so it expands at lower velocities than the Accubond.

The Barnes 165 TTSX was designed specifically for the 300 Win Mag to fit in the mag box and have the ogive closer to the lands. The TTSX has worked well for me in a few rifles, but it needs 2000 fps at impact. The ABLR only needs 1300, well lower than most other hunting bullets.

IMR 4831 has worked best for me in this weight range, but will try the Enduron powder when this runs out.

Bullet choice is totally up to you. The 178 ELD-X would make a good fit for the 23" barrel. It will also do well for longer ranges out to 1K yards, if you want. Sure, there are higher BC bullets, but for 99% of the shooting inside of 300 yards, and 165 to 180 will work just fine. I personally like the heavier bullets for the higher BC and more energy on target and deeper penetration. I think a 200+ grain works best, like a 208 A-max/ELD-M, 212 ELD-X, 210 VLD-H, 220 ELD-X, and most Berger VLD-H. But if you don't have the magazine room, some of these could be hard to fit.

Powder choice, all the powders listed above will work just fine. Anything in the R22, 4831 to H1000, IMR 7977, R25 will work.

When the Nosler LRAB came out, I jumped on the band wagon and loaded a bunch up for testing. I did load work up on multiple rifles in various calibers (6.5mm, 7m, and 30 cal). I never got the stellar accuracy I found with other bullets. It seemed the faster I pushed them, the worse they shot (in various faster calibers). I did have some good results with the 6.5 CM with 129 LRAB and the 300 WM with 190 LRAB. But all the others I had less than impressive groups.

What I think is happening is this. The LRAB bullets expand at a much lower speed because the lead inside is MUCH softer. If I have firm neck tension, I can easily deform the front area of the bullet when seating the bullet. The seating stem will leave a ring about mid way up. Normal bullets don't do this. With a bullet this soft, it HAS to deform some when entering the rifling or from the pressure behind it. At least this is my theory.

Jeff, have you seen any impressive groups with these LRAB bullets?

Very interesting Chad. I never really gave them that close scrutiny, but now will go back and reexamine their performance. I only use them in my lighter weight MRC, and they will hold a real 1 MOA, but I have not tinkered with them as much as other bullets. The 165 TTSX and 185 Berger Juggernaut, another good option, will hold 1/2 MOA in the same rifle. 0 - 250, the 165 TTSX is my first choice. It is very accurate, has a bit milder recoil in a lighter rifle without a muzzle brake, penetrates reliably, and does not tear up a lot of meat. The LRAB can cause some major damage, especially in close, as can Bergers. For my heavy 300, 210 Bergers with H1000 are the go to load. H1000 is used with the 185 Jugg as well.

Now you have me motivated to go work on the 190's some more and see what is going on. Will report back.

I have had good luck loading 200grELD-X with 4000MR and Reloader 26.

Chad, you might have a point about the 129gr LRAB and pushing them hard. I have seen about the same accuracy from them as the 130gr Berger bullets I got from you in the Grendel at 2500fps. That is not pushing them hard at all.

I haven't tried them in the 264 Win Mag or the 6.5-284.

I run a 200gr ELD-X with IMR 7977. It shoots really well and raises Cain on animals.

Great info as usual. Will start with the 178 ELDX mainly because I have a bunch in my bullet tub.
I will defiantly try the 200+ELDX when I get a chance. I'm an ELDX guy due to experience with my 308 and 6.5. They've always shot well and dropped pigs and deer pretty much where they stand.
I've got 4 boxes of American Whitetale to shoot up so I'll be using Hornady brass. I suppose the H1000 will be the powder I start with. My gun shop has plenty in stock, I think.

Big Daddy K, for shooting mule deer and whitetail with a 300 win mag, 165-180's are more than adequate. I have shot several big white tails with Sierra 165 gamekings powered by 72.2 grains of IMR 4350 out to a little beyond 300 yards. Terminal performance I experienced could be described as dramatic but 100% effective. Accuracy in my rifle is superb. For ringing steel at long range I'm sure there are better choices, and I defer to those that use it in that capacity.

I don't reload, but for factory ammo.....my 300 (Rem 700-Hunting rifle, not heavy target) shoots extremely well with Winchester Supreme 180 gr Nosler Ballistic tips and 180 gr Federal Premium Trophy Bonded tips. I've got some Hornady 200 gr ELD-X to try, but haven't yet.

Heavy's for sure with 300 win.
210 VLD + H1000
215 Hybrid + H1000
208 ELD + H1000

Never bothered with the heavies as where I hunted when I had my 300, my longest shots were >500 yards. I used a 165 SGK with a dose of H1000. Never ran them over a chrony to see what they did. Every deer/elk I took with that combo died, usually within feet of where they were standing when they were hit.

When the new ELD and ELDX was brought in I went from 178 to 225 grain in my 300 Win Mag just to see if I could get to group as well. Could not get them to group as well as the 178. Started going back down 225,212,208,200, and then settled back in with the 178. Maybe it was just me but I could not get anything to shoot as well as the 178. I was using IMR 4831, one sweet spot at around 70 and one at around 74 grains. If anyone needs any of the heavier bullets to try I still have some left.
