I've got a 26" varmint barrel 22-250 that I want to cut down. I'm thinking 20" but curious as to what I'm going to lose by cutting it that short. This is going to be a truck, stalking gun so I don't want the long barrel.

Side note, any gunsmith recommendations for having barrel cut & crowned in DFW area?

My first 220 Swift had a cut down barrel and I loved it. When I finally shot the barrel out, the replacement barrel was also 20 inches. As for velocity loss, I never worried about it. Still a laser beam. And it's so much easier to hunt with.

I'd go with Morgan at class3machining. Quick turnaround and flawless work.

A 22-250 I had for several years that I sold to fund another and wish I never had made that move had a 20 inch barrel(Sako handi hunter carbine). Made for a lot handier gun than the 24 inch barreled one I started with.

My favorite truck gun has a 16 inch barrel but would not cut one that short on the 22-250

When I was running a 24", 1:14 twist, and 55 gr Sierra Game Kings, my hand load came out screaming at 3780 fps MV.

Worse case scenario you lose 25 fps per inch, so a loss of 100 fps. I don't know about you, but I think 3680 fps is still extremely fast.

Hmm, I may just do that and go with Morgan. I've used him before with good luck. I actually need a 300wm threaded for a brake and this 22-250 cut down so I'll reach out to him.

I have my dad's old 66 Sako custom.. it's 22 or maybe a little less..
still cuts clover leaf groups at 200 yards and has killed a LOT of deer, coyotes and pigs over the years..

On a speed demon like the 22-250 with the light weight bullets, you will lose about 35-40 fps per inch. Normally you would lose about 25 fps on a standard round, but the ratio to a little light and fast bullet will be different. You can figure the normal speeds up on a 22 or 24 inch barrel and then calculate the fps loss going to whatever length barrel.
