Hey guys, I used to be an active member here a few years back but life got in the way and I had to step away from the hunting/gun world for a while. I have been mainly fishing the last 2 years but would like to pick up my fist compound bow and hunt next year. I'm looking for some recommendations for a good set up . I am 6 foot , 190 lbs (believe that has somethings to do with selecting a bow) . I have never had a compound bow in my hands. Planning a trip next weekend to Cinnamon Creek Ranch to checkout the range, get some instructions and a feel for shooting.

I would say the budge for the new setup would be in the $300 range, of course less is better and I'm open to buying a used setup if any of y'all have an old compound sitting around.

Thanks for the help and looking forward to getting back into the sport.

I would go by a cabelas. They have some package bows that do pretty well for a lot less money than the big names.

I'm still a newbie to now hunting. I purchased a Bear used from a fellow member and have been really happy with the setup. It's easy to shoot and fits me well. Great thing is it didn't break the bank.

$300 budget isn't going to get you much at CCR but...I wouldn't trust a single person on bow advice at a big box store. With that being said, If I were you, I would go to CCR, shoot a few different set ups and then try to find a used bow. But...Once you shoot a Pro Series bow, you may not be happy with a lower level entry bow, but then again, you might.

I shoot nothing but PSE but if I were in your shoes, I would try to find a used Mathews Z7 or Switchback. Cant go wrong with either of those.

While you are at CCR, have them measure your draw length.

Thanks for the advise guys .There are a few Hoyt and Mathews listed on CL right now that I may have to take a look out .

Foxtrot - defiantly going to get measured while I'm up there and keep an eye on the classified. As said, used does not bother me even if it needs to be restrung or other parts replaced . Want something with a wide range of adjustment weight so I can grow with the setup.

Mission may be your best bet for moving the poundage up

So I went with the diamond edge sb. Feel really comfortable , only thing I dislike is the cheap feeling lose grip. Does anyone have experience with torqueless custom grips?

Torqueless are good grips. I know some have used 3M foam double sticky tape under those grips to make them a little more rigid

I would pop those grips off and try wrapping with different material until you find something you like. I just use sideplates on my hoyt but on my bow before that I had it wrapped with lacrosse stick tape.

Pretty sure that is the bow my dad shoots. Got it from cabelas 2 years ago. He has been happy with it, I have shot it a bit and seems to be a pretty good shooting bow to me.

I have a martin threshold that shoots just fine and was had for around $150 brand new. I threw a whisker bisket on it some dampeners/silencers and a stabilizer. Its a 70 lb bow that shoots over 300 fps depending on arrow weight. Took a buck with it last year and it died just the same as it would have had I been using a top brand name manufacturer. Check out the articles at this site to help you make an informed and reasonable purchase. Honestly I could hunt with a higher end package but I just really don't see the need to.

Blazin- that is a great read, thank you for the link!

I went with the diamond edge SB and got the girlfriend a Mathew's craze . We both wanted something with a wide range of weight adjustments in order to develop a good form to shoot with. Starting with a lower weight and work our way up. Once we are set with a high weight , the craze will be handed over to my son (8 years old right now). Sunday I spent about 4 hours in the back yard . After some good groups at 10 yards, moved to 20 yards for some time. Photo of target is one of my 20 yard groups. Really looking forward to progressing with the sport and getting my first bow kill!

Can we talk arrows for a minute.... So I some academy special Easton alum 28" and put 100 gain tips on them. know during the learning process and sighting in I would damage them (6 so far). My draw is 28" and draw weight is 50lbs for the time being . After reading lots on the WWW I still do not know what direction to go. I want to get an affordable arrow that is hunt quality to practice and hunt with . What grain tip should I be shooting as well.

Just starting out I would recommend getting some cheap carbon arrows. Go somewhere that they will cut them to your correct length. Bass pro or Cabelas will do this for free if you buy them there. Just take your bow with you. 100 grain tips will be fine.

Getting the correct arrow is very important! Not necessarily the right brand as there are several good ones but the correct spine, length and FOC. Your spine will be a factor of your draw weight and arrow length...there will be a chart on the back of the arrow box to help you choose the correct arrow. 100 grain heads are the most common and will be the easiest/most plentiful selection when you go to buy broadheads.
