Had 17 of them in one trap and two managed to get out during all the confusion after the shooting started. I managed to give away 3 more before the cleaning and skinning started.

I love the Ruger Americans...great shooting rifles. I have lots of options, but the American's hold their own against about anyone. I have some traditional square traps, and one fair sized round one made from cattle panels. I caught this bunch off of fm2909 east of Canton. I keep traps working on a couple of properties around Canton year around.
I normally just take the hind legs off of the porkers and occasionally backstrap off of a larger sow. I freeze up the legs and give them away, as I end up with a lot more than the wife and I can use. The majority of them end up going to a muzzle loader club I belong to. I take some in coolers to the shoots once a month and they get shared with many people.

I've had one of my traps down for about a yr. now. Earl the welder has it, and was supposed to be doing some mods to it. He just called me yesterday and said it was done. I'm just getting too old to be building my own anymore.

Lost another one this morning! Pulled up next to a 4x8 trap I have that has no top. I leave it there as it's in a pretty busy deer area, and I hate catching deer in them. A good 200 pounder started going nuts in the trap, and trying to get out the top. Before I could get a pistol into play, he managed to clear his way out and into the woods he goes. All we had left was a really aromatic trap...boy was he a stinker. He had dug about a foot of sand out of the bottom before we got there, but when they get all worked up they can do some amazing stuff. It takes a pretty athletic pig to clear a 48 inch cattle panel.

That's when I gave up trapping them. Suckers would tear up a box trap and climb right over the cattle panels. I was driving up to a 4x8 and watched one big boar get up from digging and climb straight up and out with barb wire on top as razor wire.

One shot is all it should take.

I used to drive or walk right up to the traps and begin shooting them, and I would always have one or two of them escape. I changed tactics and now stay back, 50-75 yards, and pick them off. It's still chaotic, and I'll lose a "climber" every once in a while, but not nearly as frequently. It appeared to me that the combination of having a human right on top of them and having their buddies shot and squealing, got them revved up really high, so that's why I now keep my distance. I also find that I can see and react to climbers better when I'm further away from the traps. I will, every once in a while, hit a panel, but it has never caused any serious damage. I also took out a T=post once, but caused no damage that compromised the trap.

I currently have 4 traditional traps out, and one larger round trap. These 3 were in the same trap this morning that the large boar escaped from the other day. This parcel of land is the only one I take care of, where I keep track of the numbers of hogs killed. These 3 brought the total here to 590....but they sure have gotten slower over this past year.

It's been close to 8 years since I started hunting and trapping this particular parcel. It's 1,100 acres, and like a lot of properties in this area, very dense cover on a lot of it.

What kind of door do you have on that trap?

This trap has a falling door. I prefer that type of door but have tried a lot of different approaches to others. My large round trap has one of the 3 panel rooting type doors, but I have altered it to work as a single falling door too.
