Looking to grab a hunting rifle for my teenage son. Already have a 7mm-08 in a Model 7 and was looking at the Tikka T3X in the same caliber.

Looking for feedback... T3 vs T3X or other things to consider.

Hunting would be pretty much limited to Texas (South Texas) deer with shots out to 200 yds max for now. That's immediate usage... so a couple years out things could change.

Thx in advance.

That's about as good a combo as you can get for TX hunting. The Tikka factor rifles shoot very well, and 7-08 is a great round.

The T3's are being phased out now, and replaced with the T3X, which is the newer model. You can go to their website below and get some info on the changes from the T3. If you can find the T3 rifles, they will most likely be on sale and $150-$250 less than the T3X models. Either will work just fine. I have my 12 year old shooting a Tikka T3 compact in 308, and he likes it a lot.

Thx Chad... I know there were changes to the bolt cover, magazine, stock and the mount setup on the receiver.

Hoping to get some feedback on those "upgrades" also.

Next question would be ring and mount package. I've been told the T3X rifles don't have rings or mounts (not sure if the T3s did either).

I found a setup from Leupold for the T3, but not for the T3X. Any other mfgs that have a good setup? Probably going to to use an extra Leupold VX scope with 1" tube.

Last week I worked my normal 24 hour shift, and jad an overtime guy ask me a suggestion for an all around hunting/ long range target rifle. The next day i worked a sub shift for another 24 hours, and a rookie asked me for exact same suggestion. Both men received the same answer from me; a Tikka 7mm-08.

The rifle is the best bang for the buck, of mass produced rifles. I have two semi-custom built on T-3 actions and will have a third and fourth within another 30 days. They run like a Swiss watch, and shoot very tight, especially with a hand load.

The 7mm-08 is a cartridge I've been shooting for several years. I routinely carry it week in and week out, shoot it on my range, and take the opportunity on the coyote and hog I spit during my travels. It lands exactly where I expect it to, and it has killed coyotes, hogs, and whitetails without a single animal taking a step. If I were forced to use one only short action cartridge for the rest of my days, it would be the 7mm-08. No question about it.

edit: just bumped a thread showing what the cartridge can do

The T3 rifles come with a set of factory 1" rings. They are not bad, but are kind of low for most scopes. I have several pairs floating around, if you want a free set. Not sure on the newer T3X rifles.

If you order some, I like the direct mount rings to the top of the action. It eliminates the need for a base, which cuts out one less part. I used the Warne 15TM rings (30mm, high) for my son's 308 rifle. I like this style of ring. Many companies make multiple different set ups that mount direct to the Tikka action, and in the hole recoil slot that make it very durable.

Thx Fireman.

I've had that thread tagged for a while. Good info.

Chad... vendor told me the new T3X rifles do not come with rings. I'll follow up with you on the rings.

Thx again.

I have the older model Tikka T3 in 7mm-08 and its a tack driver with both Federal Fusion 140 grainers as well as Barnes TSX 120 grainers. It is easy to keep it sum MOA.

Agree 100%. You cannot beat this combo. If you are looking for a kid-friendly, low recoil load, try the 120 Ballistic Tips. They are game crushers up through mule deer and aoudad size game.

I have sang the praises of the 7mm-08 for years, got my first one in 1982 and it still shoots great. As far as Tikkas, I have a couple and have shot several more and all have been good shooters. Actually have a couple short action ones I am thinking of selling to thin the herd some.

Good choice with the Tikka and in 7mm-08 is a good bonus

I've got a T3 in 7mm-08 that's a tack driver with my 140 grain SGK handloads. Haven't tried anything else because they do everything I need them to do perfectly. Everything from raccoons to hogs dies where they stand, great round and rifle combo.

I bought a Tikka 7mm-08 based on Fireman's recommendation and it is now my only hunting rifle. I've owned Savage, Remington, and Ruger rifles and Tikka is by far my favorite.

The 7mm-08 is a great round. The recoil is very light even in the light Tikka rifle and it hits animals like a bus!

There are plenty others but none more reliable than that rifle and round for deer. It has an 18.5 inch barrel so is handy in close quarters like blind or truck and is my go to rifle when hunting the thick woods of Mississippi. After all this time and history she is still a favorite.

Confirming the T3X does not come with rings. Also be aware that the filler screws they put in the holes on top of the receiver are plastic, so take care if you need to remove them to add a base or rings.

Yes the T3x does not come with rings. Doesn't really matter, since the rings that came with the T3 didn't appear to be good quality anyway.

My Bad, my humor did not come through, Should have put dancing clowns and bananas on my post. I feel the same way about my old .257 Roberts, and it is over 70 yrs old. Wish I still had my .218 Bee and .220 Swift and 250/3000. Plus a multitude of good shooters.

The 120 nbt is one of the best kept secrets of the hunting bullets. It's a tough little booger. I ran them hard and fast out of my 7mm AI and it was brutal on critters.
