Someone please tell me if it is legal to hunt the state of Texas with a crossbow "for white tail" without an upper limb disability. I've ALWAYS been told and heard that you have to have a disability to hunt deer with one but have been in a debate with a co-worker that states the law changed and he can hunt wherever he pleases with a crossbow. I've read the law but of course "he was told by a GW that he could" LOL

From TPW website:
Crossbow
Important notice: Crossbows are lawful for any person during the Archery-Only Open Season in all counties except Collin, Dallas, Grayson and Rockwall counties, where no person may use a crossbow to hunt deer during the Archery-Only Open Season (Oct. 1 - Nov. 4, 2016) unless the person has an upper-limb disability and has in immediate possession a physician's statement that certifies the extent of the disability. An upper-limb disability is a permanent loss of the use of fingers, hand, or arm in a manner that renders the person incapable of using a longbow, compound bow, or recurved bow.

Any person, regardless of physical ability, may use a crossbow to hunt game animals or game birds in any county, including Collin, Dallas, Grayson and Rockwall counties, during a general open season or Eastern spring turkey season.

An archery endorsement is required to hunt deer during the Archery-Only Open Season. An archery endorsement is required to hunt deer at any time in Collin, Dallas, Grayson and Rockwall counties, including during the general open season (Nov. 5, 2016 - Jan.1, 2017).

A crossbow is lawful for game animals and game birds, provided:

the crossbow has a minimum pull of 125 pounds;
the crossbow has a mechanical safety; and
the crossbow stock is not less than 25 inches in length.
Telescopic sights are lawful.

God bless John Wayne!

So no, right? It clearly states you have top have a disability to hunt deer with a crossbow!

Bobcat your friend is correct.

read that again. Any person with a license and archery endorsement can use a crossbow during archery season unless in Dallas, Collin, Grayson or Rockwall counties. For those 4 counties. You can use a crossbow in those 4 counties during the general (GUN) season without an upper limb disability.

It has been that way for about 8 years if I recall correctly.

There are numerous states where crossbows are legal for hunting during arhery. Cabela's website has a nie map for those.

Not correct. It's completely legal in every county except for those few mentioned. And even in those 4, it's legal during gun season.

It's legal now. TPW discounted input from hundreds of bowhunters and went with crossbow companies to allow it. It's not archery but they are allowed in the season real aRchers fought for.

With that being said, does anyone have a good youth crossbow I could buy for my son?? LOL, the ONLY positive I get from this realization is that I now have an option for my 6 year old to hunt with me more!

What difference does it make to you? It doesn't take away anything from your bow season experience, and I think anything that gets more people excited about hunting the better.

Bobcat, I know a Granddad that took his 6 and 7 year old grandkids hunting a couple years ago and both got their deer with these.

Shooting chair

Parker Challenger II

The kids were nailing shots on the range, those 2 items with a popup blind worked well for him and those kids

Truth. Heres the real story, one of Rick Perry's deer hunting friends who owned a large ranch in south texas was miffed he couldn't use a xbow during october, seems he wasn't too good with a real bow, and urged the legislation to get xbows for everyone in archery season fast-tracked... and it was. I don't like them in october but its better than the alternative which was them opening the entire month of october to rifle hunting, yes believe it or not this was proposed by tpwd back then.

Same thing can be said a long time ago when long bow hunters complained about compound bows.

Get over it. The true reason for crossbows was TPW researched and discovered archry hunters were dwindling. They wanted to give more peole the opportunity. Also since you could use a lock bar trigger on a compound bow, whats the difference.
