I shoot a savage model 110 in 270. I'm looking for a scope to uprgrade to from the stock one. Wouldn't be shooting more than 450 yards and looking to spend in the $150-400 range.

The Bushnells in that price range are pretty good. And so are the Burris scopes. One scope I like from Burris is the Fullfield II in 4.5-14. I have a couple of them. I think they were $299 each. Leupold is always a good choice, and their warranty is great. And I have a couple of Vortex scopes that I like. So basically it seems that most major scope companies have decent scopes. That said, go look through that Burris FF II. It's a lot of scope for the money.

Got a Vortex last year for one of my gun. Was so impressed with it that I got a second one for another gun.

QUESTION ADDITION: What scope optic specs should I be looking for?
3-9X40? 4-16X42?

I'm sure you will easily find your scope. Just curious, have you ever shot this rig at 500 yards and will this be for hunting?

450 yards is a LONG WAY to shoot at anything just using holdover with a traditional reticle. And to find a scope with good optics/good reticle/good turrets in your price range will be tough. Do you shoot a lot at 450 yards?

In that price range, you can find a good, gently used Leupold or equivalent. Or an upper end Nikon.

3-9x40 does it all for hunting applications.

Im a huge fan of leupold especially the leupold vx-R line. You can find some ligthly used on swfa for about $450. 3-9x40, 2-7x33, and 4-12×40. One of my favorite features is the "fire dot" especially useful at twilight hours when the crosshairs begin to blend with whatever your aiming at. Of course they have an awesome warranty and the glass is pretty good. Probably my favorite hunting scope on the market.

if much of your shooting will be at the longer distances, I would move up from a 9x on the top, to a 12x minimum or even a 14x+.

I hunted with a 4-12x40 for years, moved to a VXIII 4.5-14x50 a couple of years ago and love it but now kinda wish I had moved up a bit more to the 6.5-20, for the longer distances. My other rifles have 4-12x40 minimum. I don't do a lot of long distances these days like I used to do, but still like the magnification available for when needed.

I haven't shot this current set up at 500. I don't think the scope could do it. It's pretty low end.

For cheaper scopes that have turrets in your price range maybe an Athlon Argos BTR or bushnell engage?

SWFA Super Sniper, fixed 6x. MOA or Mil reticle as you prefer. (I like the MOA Quad myself.)

If the shots mostly are long, the 10x fixed is nice, but too much for 100 yards and closer.

The 6x is very handy and will do fine for you.

Use a picatinny rail to mount it with the SWFA rings that are offered with the scope.

Also order the Butler Creek caps for it.

Fantastic value, and very durable and very reliable.

He is on a budget and the SS does not come with any covers.

Having broken more BC's than I can count, Aadmounts are on my rifles now, but seemed a bit pricey for this particular setup. Will say, the Aadmounts are fantastic and have not had any break thus far.

I have to order some Aadmounts. Last time I looked they were half the price they were when they first came out. They came on the new ATACR and now I have to get them for the other scopes I have.

I've been very happy with the Nikon Buckmasters 4-12 with the BDC reticle.

Burris Fullfield II, Vortex and Nikon Prostaff are not bad choices for the money at that yardage if you are not going to consistantly work past 300 yards. If you do I would go with a better quality like the SWFA SS 3-15 x 42

SS Super Sniper! I have the 3-15x42 and I love it. The 6x will suit your needs.

I don't know if 6x is enough for shots on deer at 450 yards. Assuming that is a common occurrence for the OP.

I've been extremely pleased with my Nikon pro staff 7. It's a 3-12x50 but I don't shoot over 200 yards with it.

A Leupold VX3i in 4.5-14x40 would fill the bill.
