Local pawn shop has a blued Ruger Security Six .357 with 2 3/4 inch barrel.

It's wearing an ugly over=sized wooden grip, otherwise it appears to have average wear for a gun that is at least 29 years old- most likely older.

I did not get to work the hammer or dry fire. It had a trigger lock and I was not really that interested at the $499 price tag. I was about to leave when the guy said he would take $350.

I left to think about it, do some research on the gun and,of course, come to the forum for input.

What do you think of; 1) the gun itself; b) the $350 price ;and III) age of the gun and whether or not replacement parts could be found if needed?

Any input welcome. Thanks in advance.

The Ruger Security Six has a great reputation; built like a tank. I am pretty sure it is still 'covered' by Ruger. Parts (if needed) won't be a problem. Ruger will have parts as will gunparts.com

Ruger does not have a gun warranty per se or warranty period; rather they just promise to do right by Ruger gun owners and in my opinion they set the standard for customer support. I have Ruger pistols and have only needed service twice. On one occasion they sent me the part at no charge ( a roll pin) and the other they expressed the pistol from my door and back to my door a week later repaired at no cost (not even shipping).

They may (depending on model) make safety upgrades (no charge) if you send them an older gun to service (if the gun does not use a transfer bar they may add one)- might make a difference if you are a collector.

I am under the impression that most safety related repairs are free or at least not expensive; cosmetics like re-bluing they would charge. Normal wear they might charge- but they build their revolvers like tanks.

Bottom line if that is the caliber and size handgun you want I'd snap it up at that price ($350).

If you don't buy it, tell me where to go so I can.

Thanks for the responses. After a closer inspection it will be coming home with me. $350 out the door for a vintage Ruger was just too good to pass up.

You will love it. I carry a
One as my side arm in the woods. Never failed to go bang no matter how dirty or wet it was.

May pick it up this weekend. My son will be home from college for the 4th and he's never shot a .357 up
If I'm going to make noise a .357 is a lot more fun than fireworks and to me a lot more rewarding too!

I love my Security Six 4" stainless. It's just a good solid revolver. My example has had at least two previous owners, but is still in excellent condition.

I have a GP100 Match Champion that has the fixed Novak combat rear sight. The Security Six has the traditional adjustable sight. Although I prefer the Match Champion, my youngest son prefers the Security Six. Oddly, me eldest son prefers a traditional, full-underlug, GP100.

Then my wife asks, "why do you need so many revolvers? Aren't they kind of antiquated?" That's about the time I grab my GP100 MC, Rossi M92 trapper, and Rossi Ranch Hand; and head to the range.

I have a 4 inch barreled Service Six Stainless that I have no idea what the round count is on it but she still shoots extremely well. That one is on the hip a lot when working around the lease

Shot the Security Six yesterday and it is everything I hoped it would be.

I have to say this is the most satisfying of the last four gun purchases I have made. I haven't owned a centerfire Ruger revolver in many years and it is almost like a reunion with a long lost friend.

To paraphrase Bogey "Security Six, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship"... up
