Have a set of 50+ yr old mule deer antlers that have hung in a barn most of that time. They have not been in direct sunlight or rain and bad weather. However, time and other factors have taken the "life" out of them. Need some suggestions as to how to put that "life" back in them. Also, need a small inexpensive wooden panel with a cover for the skull cap to mount them on. Any ideas? Thanks.

There are hundreds of YouTube videos on how to restore antlers. I suggest you watch several, some are rank amateurs, while others are professionals. Some of the taxidermy supply places have kits that also have instructions.

I was watching a man mount an old dried up set of antlers on a new cape. This was many years ago at a hunting expo in San Antonio. I asked how he got the color back in the antlers. He said he mixed tar with turpentine and rubbed it on them. They looked pretty good.

Recolored this elk deadhead and mule deer antlers the "natural" way. Light coat of liquid pine tar then follow with dirt and bark mix. Rub down with a good sticky cedar afterwards to set the color.
If the antlers are not cracked and dried they will take the natural color and look like the animal did the rubbing.

I use wood stain to repair scratches on floors. Use multiple coats until I attain the color I'm looking far.
