We had our shotguns with 7-1/2 birdshot, that worked but.... Went and got some 4 shot small game the next day and that worked better but i was wondering if the 22 rifle wouldn't be better. We're hunting them at night with a spotlight, probly going back next weekend and would rather take em out with one or two shots instead of 3 or 4 with the shotgun. Them big boys don't die very easy. I got a box of .22lr 40 gr hp, do y'all think that will work for up to 50 yard shots? What do y'all use? Also, is sub- sonic any good for this situation?

22 LR Hollow Points in any rifle works just fine. Hit them in the head and they will go down.

I use the CCI Segmented HP's. It puts down coons with ease.

I shoot most of my coons with a 22 but they are already in foot hold traps, the others are usually shot with my 6.8 SPC

I Love using my 17HMR topped with a vortex Hog Hunter scope. The Hog hunter lets in a lot of light, it is a little heavy but has never let me down.

Hog hunter scope, ill check those out. I've kicked around the idea of getting a 17hmr, i keep being told my 22 is sufficient for what i use it for.

The .22 is nice 'cause I don't use any hearing protection with it (as long as it's a rifle.) My .17 has just a little too much "zing" to not where ear plugs in these old ears.

Yes, I'm noticing guns seem to be louder as I get older. Went to a Indoor range yesterday for the first time, i had hearing protection but still hated it! I was nervous wreck shaking the whole time i was trying to shoot(still did pretty good though), it was way too loud in there.

My son just gave me a gift certificate to a brand new range, right in town, on Loop 1604. 100yd INDOOR range. 'Can't imagine how loud it'll be.

I've always used a 22 long rifle when they were treed by my hounds. 22 short when in a trap. If I was spotlighting I might move up to a 22 magnum or 17 HMR just for fun and additional range if a coyote was spotted on the ground too.

My running around the ranch gun is a Ruger American Compact in 7mm-08. I keep it loaded with the Hornady Custom Lite load with the SST bullet. Coons to hogs it stops them all. If it's in a trap my Ruger 22/45 gets them dead quickly as well.

I've been thinking about both the 17hmr and that 7mm-08, more power and a flat trajectory on both, if i remember right.

Your .22 should be fine out to 50 yds. or so. I use a .17 HMR because my stand location is 100 yds. away from an automatic feeder at a dedicated Hog Stand.

But honestly...I consider the .17 'marginal' for vermin the size of raccoons. I use it because of the flat trajectory and I end up shooting quite a few coons off of the feeder itself. The .17 NEVER exits...so even if they are right in front of the motor, I can still take the shot.

I've had quite a few 'crawl offs' using the .17, I have used just about every ammo type available with the same results (taking mostly thoracic shots).

I use a 17WSM. The go down like a sack of bricks. I use to use a 22mag but ammo got hard to find for awhile so switch over to the 17WSM with 20 grain bullets.

My favorite for 30 years has been the 22wmr, but when the ammo shortage hit I went to the 17 Hornet and It's replaced the 22wmr as my favorite.

22lr in a trap or under a feeder. But a few are victims of whatever deer rifle is handy, and some have been skewered while bow hunting. We use a shotgun with whatever shot is available to drive around and ambush feeders and spotlight them out of trees.
