A lot easier to fill now that it's closer to the ground

Here's the, "was it a bear?" test to determine if it was a bear:

Could you recognize what was left as a feeder?

Yes ---> Not a bear

I believe a giant pterodactyl lit on it and squashed it down.

Back-up choice is hogs.

thanks for the inputs ... I have never had hogs do that much damage to a feeder without knocking it over, just found it odd that the legs got pushed out that far without it tipping over when unstaked. I normally do stake the legs when there is the possibility of hogs ...

I'll be making a run out within the next couple of weeks with a different feeder, will t-post the legs and hog/cattle panels to rebuild the pen to try to keep hogs out. There wasn't originally any cattle on the place, but some have escaped from where they are supposed to be and freely roam mostly in the lower canyon areas near solar wells with water (I have hog/cattle panels around those feeders), but with the rains, there are some caliche pits that hold water up on the tops for short periods of time. The cattle have never shown any interest in getting inside the field fence pen though, 5 years of off and on worth of pictures from game cam never shows them even trying to reach over the top, just the sulfur salt block about 20-30 feet away.

I just wasn't sure what a bear would do to a feeder, never had any experience with them.

Make sure to put the panels up high. I can't tell what kind of wire or paneling you were using. But if using panels, make sure to put them up high, even off the ground if they are the short hog panels. Cattle will lean on a short fence and easily bend it over and destroy a short feeder pin. If we have cattle problems, I'll even run a few strands of barbed wire at the top of the T-posts. I don't think this was pigs, because I've seen MANY feeders and pins get tore up by cattle just like this on game cameras. It needs to be fortified to keep the cattle out.

it was just old 36-38" high goat/sheep rolled field fencing that I put the top up about 44-48" high with the bottom fairly loose 6-10" off the ground for fawns/yearlings to crawl under. I can not tell from the pictures the LO sent me of the damage whether the entire pen is still intact but cattle haven't bothered it in about 5 years it's been in place ... oh well, it will get replaced my next trip out likely with cattle panels with a few cutouts lower for the younger deer. I even sometimes put two t-posts about 6-8 inches apart where the panels end with horizontal stay wires at 6" and 24" high as a small opening for fawns/yearlings ... small hogs can get in too but nothing over ~40 lb size.

just weird since we have never captured a picture on game cams hogs or seen one within the adjoining ranches nor have the adjoining places hunters or LOs had any issues, pictures or seen them ... closest place that has seen them is over 3 miles to the south and they have year around ground water but only occasional hogs seen. But guess they have moved in or at least passing thru from time to time.

the old saying definitely might be true ... about you either have hogs or will have hogs sometime

I say it was cows. They finally decided they wanted the corn. Post up pick when new pen is built.

^^^^^^^ This! Nothing leaned on those legs. Your legs aren't staked into the ground. All of that moisture on the ground enabled the weight of the barrel + feed to push down and bend the joints causing the legs to slide out. That is also what made the barrel cave in on its sides where the joints are. No pigs, no cows. Straight up physics IMO. Add stakes to the legs and they won't budge.

Not being a jerk but...I think this feeder was so pathetic it committed suicide.

Get you a 4 leg feeder with feet and drive 6ft re-bar through them. Might as well go for an eliminator scatter plate too.

That was a pretty stout feeder. I've filled it plenty of times myself. I'll admit the pen was lacking quite a bit, but like he said, it's kept everything else out the past 5 years we've been there. The rest of the feeders do have panels around them, with this one being the only exception. 6' rebar? Hope you have a jack hammer to lend out to get anything that deep in the ground. That's some hard hard ground, hence why we haven't fixed that pen just yet grin

Yeah had some old cheap moultree feeders everyone laughed at. One had an HEB bag shoved in it as a funnel ....damn things lasted for years..we also had the feeders with a coffee pot percolator eye for a dawning dusk timer, before timers were around......anywho....yeah drive rebar several feet into the ground. If the ground is too hard we use a rotary demo hammer drill thingy.... I say your feeder just collapsed on its own. Instead of driving the T-post down the legs why not just drive them straight down near the feet, with a t-post driver, and wire them to the legs.

I had a steer bend the heck out of my winch up feeder top rubbing on a leg once. Had pics of it. And always the same leg. Thank goodness for grills or I would really hate cows.

right ... I'll take the high road ... the feeder did not collapse from the weight of the feeder & corn, period! I wouldn't be afraid to sit on top of the barrel with it full of corn prior to whatever caused the legs to spread and I'm a pretty big ole boy. As I stated several times earlier, the legs weren't staked because there were no hogs known anywhere near the ranch, only feral cattle that the pen has kept them away from the feeder for 5 years, the pen was lame I'll admit but it was what I had available when I found the cows on the place and they have shown no threat in that same amount of time. By looking at the ground in the picture, it appears we have hogs or at least some hogs passing thru. I'll get out there before long with a newly refurbished feeder, cattle panels and t-post/wire anchor the legs of the feeder and re-install my game cams. I'll take pictures of how the current set up looks before taking it all down/re-arranging, along with the new setup.

But the comparison of the old POC make shift feeders described was somewhat of an insult! I've maintained 7-15 feeders over the past ~30+ years, year around on multiple properties and never had one spread out like this one without it being turned over when not staked. I've got 3 currently at my own place outside of Bertam that is infested with hogs, none have pens or staked legs even, the hogs might shove them around a little bit when they are low on corn but never turned one over or did any damage to the legs.

this is how I normally stake the feeder legs down ... when no pen, cattle & hogs in the area...

It looks like the work of hogs. They can tear up a bowling ball. Unless it happened on a full moon, then it was more than likely a chupacabra.

yep, it was definitely hogs based on how deep they rooted almost the entire pen. I liked to never got two of the legs out of the ground as they were almost a foot deep in the rooted area when wet, then set up like concrete. Had to use a rock bar to get deep enough to free them. Anyway, old pen removed, new pen built with hog panels. New feeder back up and operational with t-post driven in at an angle & wired to feeder legs (just in case something gets thru the pen). game cam back up too.

I agree. Looks like all the legs are bent the same to me so maybe it just collapsed. If not that then cows.

about 40-45 miles southwest of Ozona, SW Crockett county.

the original pen top wire looked intact although a bit loose, no sign that cattle got in, was all 38-42 high all the way around. the bottom was a different story and very loose & rolled up almost knee high in several spots, hogs definitely could pass in and out with ease. I suspect it was the results of several rain events and hogs. the entire feed pen had been rooted over a foot deep, closer to 18 inches in spots, hard pack caliche with rocks up to volleyball size. it was not just the barrel collapsing under it's own weight without numerous other forces involved. Hopefully all resolved now.
