This was a neat opportunity to intentionally be able to make a what would be a poor shot on a hog and to see what the damage would be while not torturing the hog in the process. I teamed up with Pig_Popper who was testing his own ammo and so while he was head shooting the hog, I was hip shooting it. The distance was 80 yards. I will let the video show some of the damage his bullet did and he can comment on it further ( http://texashuntingforum.com/forum/.../1/A_field_report_-_338_Federal_i#UNREAD ). My CBB MKZ 105 gr. bullet blasted through the femur and exited on the opposite side of the bone. For such a lightweight bullet, it penetrated well after going through bone and did a lot of soft tissue damage. It was a fine hunt. I like nothing better than planning on spending several hours waiting on a hog only to have it show up after just one, especially when we didn't know if it was coming anymore.

Interesting! I used to be a Big & Heavy Bullet fan, but in the past year or two I've backed off and have starting shooting lighter, faster bullets. Not that I'm down in the 105 grain range with my .308. Still, energy is a direct function of mass but it increases by the square of velocity meaning that (within some practical bounds) faster can be better. Keep after 'em!
I have two unwritten rules: 1. 2.

Yeah, nothing wrong with a big, heavy bullet moving that fast. His bullet was hitting with about 80% more energy on top of being wider (bigger hole) and heavier. I like the fact that it didn't over penetrate. The tradeoff, of course, is recoil. Lot's more recoil for that round.
The 105 CBB MKZ is working well for me, but I think I would prefer the heavier 118 gr. that opens and stays open wider. Both weights are penetrating well and don't good damage. I have no qualms with hunting with either weight.

It was an awesome hunt - thanks for the invite and we can get that simultaneous shot down under 5 hundredths of a second with some practice!

Interesting!
