Did I misunderstand? I THINK the head of the game wardens in Bell County told me that they have game cameras out that will notify them when there is movement and they can look at it on Satellite.. I dont keep up with all the newest camera updates , but that I what I THINK he told me. If true this might be a solution to the previous poster dirtnap and his poaching problem.

They may have IP cameras set up in some areas that will alert them when they are activated, but they can only see the camera view. Satellites only cross a given area every so often so the chances of any satellite being over that area when they get a camera alert is slim to none. Also, TPWD doesn't have direct access to satellites.

Geostationary satellites sit in the same spot over the planet. It's a damn good thing they make satellites that can loiter otherwise GPS wouldnt work very well.

On one of the game warden shows they put a tracking device in a tree stand. They were able to go exactly where the thieves took the tree stand.Maybe that is what he meant.

I have a hard time believing they give TWPD game wardens access to a satellite to look for deer feeder vandalism.

Speaking to OP's referenced scenario here - http://texashuntingforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/6756116/Problem_with_poachers#Post6756116

Probably talking about a trail camera with a cell phone signal that emails them pictures instead of being saved on a SD card.

it wasn't vandalism it was theft, the two guys were stealing lots of tree climbing type deer stands and the wardens wanted it stopped. so they inserted a little GPS tracker in the stand and placed the stand in the field. Then when they guys stole it and the warden called the other saying it was on the move and he looked the GPS position on his phone and they went right to the location of where the stolen stands were and caught them in possession. It's no different than people and companies place tracks inside expensive tractors, bull dozers, other types of heavy machinery. Am sure you can watch this paticular episode on you tube or on the next round of Lone Star Law.

I suspect Tx mudder got it right -------- I misstated --- looking at the pics on cell phone is most likely what he was talking about. Thanks for everyone's help.

If GWs had access to satellites like that, then so too would the cops. Such satellites exist and are very expensive to operate and I highly doubt they would task them to use in regards to such mundane crimes if they did have such access, which they don't.

GPS satellites are not geostationary and they work very well not being that way.
Quote:
The nominal GPS configuration consists of a network of 24 satellites in high orbits around the Earth, but up to 30 or so satellites may be on station at any given time. Each satellite in the GPS constellation orbits at an altitude of about 20,000 km from the ground, and has an orbital speed of about 14,000 km/hour (the orbital period is roughly 12 hours - contrary to popular belief, GPS satellites are not in geosynchronous or geostationary orbits).
