Had this bunch in a trap a couple days ago, but they decided to mostly leave by the time I got there.

They managed to rip off a piece of panel and all of them left but 4. I guess I was just stuck with the less intelligent ones.

I would have thought that the panels would hold them.

Had a large Boar in a trap several years ago and he almost distroyed the thing. It was made with hog panels and iron frame. He died trying trying to tear a hole in the panel. He had it big enough to get his head barely out and died of stress I suppose. It was in the summer time. They can do a lot of things people don't think they can. I put nothing past them.

The kind of panel you have looks like they can bite it all the way down since the holes are big enough. I don't know if it makes a difference but on ours we have hog panels. Had a sow run full speed into it and bent the panel but didn't break it and cracked her skull open. I tell you, when they are in a trap they are wild.

Maybe I'm wrong but I think your problem may have been using plastic cable ties instead of wire.

That would be another reason. Need to use bailing wire.

The galvanized electric fence wire works very well and is pretty cheap for a LOT of wire.
I always used bailing wire or tie wire or #10 tie wire until I started messing with electric fence wire.
Stay away from the aluminum stuff though, it breaks pretty easy.

Any yeah, there are now a lot of trap educated pigs in your area.

I use 3/8" cable clamps. Overlap the panels one or two squares, put a socket on my battery drill to spin up the nuts on the cable clamps. Takes just a few minutes to erect and join the panels, super strong, reusable.

As usual Flint, you are pretty professional in your operation. Unfortunately I used a hodgepodge of materials building that round trap. I had some cattle panels and assorted pieces of panels left over from a cement laying project. I had some sections that were maybe 18" tall and about 12' long that I attached along the bottoms to help reinforce those areas, and one of those is what the little buggers tore loose.
We live and learn, and if we live long enough there will be a lot more experiences to look back on at laugh at.
I opened up a door on the trap to let any and everything that wants, to come eat some free corn again....and one day I'll set the trap and try again with it. My smaller traps continue to be productive.

That's a pretty dang good idea there flintknapper!
I think I will use this one.
Thank You Sir!

Stony, you have a long successful history of trapping hogs. Just keep doing what you are doing, its been working well for you. Keep after them.

Good to hear from you.

Flint.

Hogs have nothing but time when they are trapped. I've had more than a few get out in clever ways. Live and learn for the next time.

^^^^^^^^^^ Amen!

I've witnessed them trying to dig/root under the panels. Lift the panels, pull on the panels, charge headlong into the panels, climb out, jump out. Same thing with the saloon doors on my traps, they will examine them, pull on them with their mouths, bump them.

A lady was referred to me yesterday to get rid of a hog for her. Her husband was gone and there were no firearms at their ranch. They had a long trap built out of panels, but it only had an 18" square door. There was only one little 30 lb. sow in it and I told her I would gladly shoot it for her (suppressed .22), but no way my old body was going to fit in there to get it out. She volunteered to drag it out to the door, and all worked out. I gave her advice about catching more, as they have a large supply of them in her area, and they know very little about how to catch them. It really amazed me that she was able to catch one through that little door in the first place....and she said she would get her husband to build a bigger one.
