Took my son, his girlfriend and my girlfriend out for lunch today at the Ozona Grill on Greenville Ave. where D Magazine said was the Best Chicken Fried Steak (CFS) in DFW, other web sites praised Ozona Grills CFS also.

My son and I had the CFS and both agreed that it was good, just okay good. The steak was small and we got the bigger dinner portion, the meat was good just okay good, the gravy was really rich and seemed to drown out the taste of everything else, you barely noticed the crust. We were disappointed.
My spinach salad was way good with fried Jalapeno pieces in it, the Borracho Bean soup was Delicious it made my meal Wife had the Pork Chop and we had another it's good, just okay good, sons girlyfriend had nachos and enjoyed them. It is a neat restaurant with just okay food.

The people at D Magazine and those other web sites need taste classes because they were way off

I like my CFS with gravy on the side.

place called sidekicks that was ok. i think they
closed up a long time ago.

It's been 3 or 4 years ago when I last had the cfs at Ozona
and it was good, better than just ok good. Nice cut of
meat seasoned well, the gravy and sides also tasty.
Things must have gone downhill as often happens
when a place is given a meaningless award and the increased
business it can bring or it may have been an off day.

Been a few years since I have eaten the CFS at Ozone's. It used to be very good, but not what I would consider the best in Dallas.

I do love a good cfs, but I can't seem to find a place that's consistently good. Happily, I'm not that hard to please.

At Pioneer Restaurant in Wichita Falls they put the gravy on the bottom. The integrity of the crust remains intact. Details man....details.

Consistency is the rub.
I've had good CFS at quite a few places. On some a return visit had another.
Even then I've gone back only to be somewhat disappointed. I don't think it's
that hard to make a good CFS but at the same time it's easy to do one thing wrong
and it's not so good anymore. When the stars align, just savor the moment.
