Blended in a Damascus.
I've got lots of scrap pieces, and would like to make some axes, hatchets, and knives. Would it work blended in with other metals?

I can't find any reliable heat treat information on the AR 500 but what little data I've read leads me to believe that it may not harden enough to make a good blade.

Wow, I thought opposite would be true. Too hard to drill a hole in, and it's literally bullet proof. But you know more than I.

Seems like it's about it's max hardness as it comes from the mill and that's about 50 on the Rockwell C chart and that's around 8 to 10 points softer than what a blade should be. You're right that 50 is still way too hard to drill through without a good carbide bit. You can always take a piece and heat it non-magnetic or sort of an orange hot and quench it in water. Then put it in a vise and hit it with a hammer. If it snaps off it will harden, if it bends then it isn't hard enough.

I will do that. Have forge, anvil, and post leg vise mounted to a 1000# table, all in close enough proximity to test that without any headache.
Thank you!

if you melt AR500 to blend you start all over with molten metal
that metal is no longer AR500 hardness , you can temper to new hardness
go for it

I don't know what the question marks are for. if you melt AR500 to blend you start all over with molten metal
that metal is no longer AR500 hardness , you can temper to new hardness
go for it That's my thinking. I just didn't know if the AR 500 was a good choice for my hard steel.

You'd have to get to somewhere between 2500° and 2700° to melt it. And unless you have a way of adding carbon to the mix in the right percentages it still isn't going to get hard enough to make a good blade.

Medium-carbon steel[edit] Approximately 0.3–0.6% carbon content.[1] Balances ductility and strength and has good wear resistance; used for large parts, forging and automotive components.[9][10] High-carbon steel[edit] Approximately 0.6–1.0% carbon content.[1] Very strong, used for springs, swords, and high-strength wires.[11] Ultra-high-carbon steel[edit] Approximately 1.25–2.0% carbon content.[1] Steels that can be tempered to great hardness. Used for special purposes like (non-industrial-purpose) knives, axles or punches. Most steels with more than 2.5% carbon content are made using powder metallurgy. The carbon content of AR500 is around .32%

Thanks Mike.
Looks lime I'll leave it alone for blade making.

Ah!
I've seen some good ones mass produced. But can't bring myself to buy one. Because I look at it and think "I can make that".
