I've seen dozens of threads on several forums about picky eaters. Edgar eaters is one of the most overlooked traits a gun dog can have. I've had both. Thoughts?

I don't like picky eaters or dogs that try and scarf down everything in site as fast as possible. Most labs seem to be the latter. My older lab is a very eager but Kimber is a good eater but eats at a reasonable rate.

They say fast eaters are more prone to gastric torsion.

My cockers are different. Buster the almost 2 year old male has always been picky. He picks up 4 or 5 kibbles and drops them on the ground and eats them one at a time. Tried all different kinds of food and always the same results. Now he will eat vienna sausages or boiled chicken until its gone really fast. Missy the new little 11 week old female eats like she hasn't eaten in weeks. But she does not overeat. She eats until full and stops.

It makes a big difference on hunting trips.

Bill,
My setters have always been finicky eaters, especially while traveling. I found and tried the Purina Smart Choice 30/17 turkey and venison dogfeed. They dang near attack me now to get to their pan of feed. I am feeding it now and I fed it during the hunting season. They love it and are doing great on it, plus their deposits are always tight and firm now. They retain it real well.

I have two females (mother & daughter) that I have to put chicken broth on their kibble if I want them to eat while on the road, everyone else eats pretty good.

My Britt eats everything in front of her, have to regulate the amounts. Pointer is finicky, runny canned food over some dry when she travels. She'll be in for a quite change when I drop her off with Ronnie Smith for 4 months at the end of June

Bobby, I've been feeding Redford brand dog food from pet supplies plus chicken and rice blend and mine loves it. He chews every single piece, no inhaling. If I still had labs and brits I guarantee you they would just swallow it whole and be done with their bowl in less than a minute.

My 7 year old female pointer is a very picky eater and will not eat anything but the scraps from our meals on hunting trips. She stays skinny throughout hunting season. The 3 year old female pointer will eat her food within 10 minutes. Sure makes you appreciate the ones that eat well and maintain a good weight, especially while hunting.

My 3 year old lab eats like I have been starving her. She also salivates like crazy when she thinks she is about to eat.

I have a treeing cur that will eat every time you put something in front of him. I also have a young feist and he will eat, but doesn't want it in the bowl!

when I give her a X-large Greenie, she freeking drools all the way to the couch before she eats it. I have a Duluth Trading cover on my couch and tile floors
