I've lived in Texas for close to four years now and I just got my first hog this last weekend. I was at Trey Kuenstler's on a ram hunt and after we got our rams I decided I'd take advantage of his "unlimited free hogs" offer. I set up on the porch of the lodge until a boar offered me a 20 yard shot at 1:45am. Even in the limited moonlight I could see him perfectly. I instinctively aimed for the were the vitals would be on a deer (force of habit and lack of experience are my excuses) and squeezed off a .243 round. My buddy said he saw him drop for a second before disappearing into the brush but we couldn't find a speck of blood so I assumed I missed. The next morning I felt awful for missing such a easy shot but thankfully we found him 50yards down the road from the lodge! Double lung shot, full penetration, golf ball sized exit wound, but no blood. I had always heard these suckers were tough but I never imagined a 70lbs animal could take such damage. I'm definitely hooked and next time am aiming for behind the ear!

Perfect shot

Problem - you didn't spend enough time tracking/looking

Good job on the hog!

Just below the ear (skull) is a better shot than behind the ear (neck muscle). If shooting neck, go for center of neck to hit the spine.

I would have never been able to track him in the dark. He ran into heavy brush going south but we found him 50 yards east of where I shot him! Apparently he must of made a big semicircle. The only blood I found around him was right where he lay, no trail or anything. The only reason we even saw him was that he was right off the road and we where up high enough in the Polaris to see him over the grass.

You wound one of them, they always run for the cover. They can be a real problem finding them in the dense Texas cover.

The addiction has begun. Sorry bud, no cures currently available. Let it happen.
