Anyone hunt in hall county? Specifically around Turkey? Curious to know how the hunting is and what to expect.

We're about 20 miles southeast of Turkey. We're actually in Motley county but not by much. Last season was our first year in that area so my experience is limited to just one season. The whole area was pretty much devastated by the drought with almost zero fawn survival rate during those years so the existence of 4 and 5 year old deer was very slim last season. The area is making a strong come back and as long as we keep getting some timely rains things look promising for the future as we have a lot of nice 2 and 3 year old bucks. We've got about a 50/50 mix of whitetails and mule deer on our place and like most of the area a whole lot of hogs. Had tons of quail this year but never saw a sign of a turkey but actually that's fine by me. We've got 5000 acres leased and we decided not to take any whitetails last season, giving them the chance to repopulate.
We had some really impressive 3.5 year old bucks that should be nice this coming season.

I'm in Hall and totally agree with Mike. No mature deer but the up-and-comers look really nice. up

Yup. They have the good deer already marked and located before season starts.

Interesting to hear about local poaching,

I hunted in the area 25 years ago on a friend's lease. Loved the area and have always wanted to find a lease there. Back then, someone poached a nice WT and the game warden called my friends Dad to ask if the poacher was part of the lease.

Is this area really known for poaching? If so, maybe it goes way back.......

The year I bought my place (2009), we did have a small spike killed for hams and backstraps, the rest of the carcass left and covered with leaves. I think the PO had given some dubious characters permission to hunt. Nothing noticed since then, though. My area is heavy farming, and my family does frequent walks and I have yet to have someone not stop by us to check and make sure we're OK. Good people for the most part, but that obviously doesn't mean that poaching cannot or doesn't happen.

I have heard that down by the river poaching is pretty common, but I wouldn't go so far as to say Hall County is "known" for poaching. Certainly no more than any other place.

My Son and I both killed our first Texas mule deer in Hall CTY, about 20 miles southwest of Estelline. 27k acre ranch. No WT on this particular place. Awesome experience. Would love to hunt that ranch again, someday.

My two former brothers-in-law are huge poachers of game and fish in the area. BIG TIME!
