Good afternoon all ! New here on the forum. Located spring tx/houston tx. Basically y'all it's this : I've come to the realization that hunting "near-ish" houston is just tough as hell. Reason being,,, seems like if you wanna hunt : shell out $1000-1500 for a lease ( nope) ,, have a friend or family that Owns land (no such luck there),, or hunt public land/ask the advice of one familiar with the public land layout and hunting (everyone I know says not to waste my time in Sam houston national ) . And I just CAN NOT bring myself to pay $350 to shoot a WILD Hog Also ,, not Very familiar with cities locations compared to houston and surrounding ..etc
What do I do y'all ? Where should I look ?...etc I shower regularly, I'm not weird (I don't think so), I'm respectful as hell. Always lookin for a possible huntin buddy ..
Thank you all for your time and consideration !
Respectfully, EWC

It is not the violence that sets men apart, it is the distance that he is prepared to go.

Hunting is not a waste of time. Be it a National Forest or a HF. Hunting does not mean you go out and within 10 minutes you get what ever you were after. The best hunts are when you really hunted. It would seem Sam Houston would be a good place to start.

With your first post it seemed as though you really did not want to hunt because you stated that hunting SHNF was a waste of time. There are numerous folks on here that hunt it. Are they just wasting their time?

Man. Don k .... I'm trying not to sound disrespectful ......... RE-read
Most people I've talked to ........ as in the people that I KNOW and have TALKED to ..THEY said it would waste my time ....... I NEVER said it was a waste of time .... I ALSO suggested that maybe someone with some LAND LAYOUT experience ( I dunno, maybe someone who actually has experience hunting that place might toss me a pointer ) ....... anything else sir ??
I'm not sure if you're trolling me ,,,,, or if my message was really that vague ? I'd like to correct the situation , whatever it may be

The national forest is a tough but rewarding hunt. 1000-1500 dollars is not high especially if it's near Houston. It is kinda tough to swallow at first but if it grants you year round access it not that bad. Good luck finding a place. But, Dont give up on the national forest. You may be surprised how good it can be.

Go hunt public land. That'll put the 1500 for a lease into perspective real quick.

--- > Public hunting Plenty folks hunt public lands, the section in the link above is specific to Public lands. A year around lease offers quite a bit more 'in the woods' time.

Give Sam Houston a shot. Not as you were told. You just have to spend time there scouting in the off seasons and getting to know the place. Plenty of good dear are shot out of the state land every year. But you have to put in the leg work. Or get lucky. Welcome to the Forum. FYI 1000-1500 is cheap for a lease.

Honestly that's absolutely nothing for a lease. Where there is a will there is a way.

If you have a problem with private land, personal property rights, the fact that someone would charge you $3,000 - $15,000 (or more) per year to trespass on their property and kill a plethora of game animals... I'd suggest that Texas probably isn't going to float your boat.
If you learn to celebrate personal success and freedom, the free market, and self improvement to achieve whatever personal goals you choose to set for yourself, then stick around. Texas was built and developed by that type of people.
They didn't design Texas for folks who set minimal goals and settle for mediocrity.
Shape up or ship out.

Sounds like the OP should go buy his own property, & see how he likes paying annual property taxes, general upkeep, & dealing with poachers/trespassers.
I just don't understand the "hunt free" crowd. I assume they have no idea how much time, work, & money go into a nice property, for any use.
I would never trade Texas private property rights for "free" public hunting. The freedom of owning or leasing property is the pinnacle of human development.

And we don't need any more in Texas. My first border wall would be between here and the other states.

You may try your luck at the Texas Parks and Wildlife drawn hunts. Also, I see quite a few hog hunts in the Outfitters and guide section for $125.00 for 1-2 hogs.
