I would like to start looking for a new gunsmith in Texas, hopefully one who has good knowledge and does thourough jobs on competition / hunting rifle builds. Lower half of Texas would be better so I can drive up there.

Matt and rest of Team at Hill Country Rifles are great IMO. They have done a lot of work for me over the years and always happy with result.

For pistols, Alex Hamilton (Ten-Ring) in San Antonio is top notch.

Will most gunsmiths ship back to you without requiring FFL dealer?

If the gunsmith is an 01 FFL, he is the "dealer", and the firearm can be sent back directly to you.

It is worth the drive to Houston (spring) to see Aaron Roberts at Roberts Precision rifles. His work, in my opinion, is the best there is. Doubly so if you are looking at a competition rifle.

Redbeard gunworks down by corpus or Aaron over in spring are both top notch.

Ditto on Mark. He built two fine Silhouette Rifles for my son and I and I currently have a .308 project at his shop.

He is worth the call.....
