Just got home from buying furniture for our new house. I get it, they work on commission but sheesh. I don't need checked up on every 3 minutes. Literally, every 3-5 minutes had a salesperson asking if we needed anything, had any questions, knew that they sold only American made, blah blah blah. Leave me alone! Saw an $18k mattress. I felt like a sucker paying $2k for one, what kinda schmuck pays $18k for a mattress???

We spent weeks and weeks looking for a living room leather sectional + loveseat and a large dining table....DFW area, Houston area, Waco, Temple, Athens, Tyler, San Antonio.....and many places in between......same thing....drove me nuts.....the first one to see ya come in the door was on ya like a leach until ya got out the door.... Bout killed me just doing a couple items.....can't imagine doing a whole house.....finally found a living room set and ended up making my own dining table because we couldn't find a large simple oak plank table.... Furniture shopping may actually be worse than car shopping.......

Just hire an interior designer. Give them a budget and tell them to surprise you.

I can tell you where not to go. A place in Dallas called "Luxury of Leather" Paid $1500 for a couch 4 years ago. Leather is peeling from all the cushions. It is rice paper thin which you would not know until it starts bubbling and peeling. Since i did not buy their top of the line, no warranty.

I went to Nebraska Furniture looking for a sectional couch, I found their stuff to be cheaply made and I wasn't impressed.
For a mattress I would look into a Memory foam, Get one maybe from Costco. They are the ones that are in a box and you remove and the become full size. Many people like Casper or Leesa have 180 day return policies.

We've ordered a bed from Wayfair and a few couches from Coleman Furniture. No dealing with salesmen. Just a few clicks and it shows up at your house.

I make most of my stuff besides things that need upholstery (couches, recliners) or mattresses.
So much furniture out there that is expensive but made out of pallets and gum.

We never furnished an entire house at one time. We added as we moved up. I now need to downsize.

We caught an Ethan Allen going out of business when we were engaged 28 years ago. Everything 75% off. My Dad bought us bedroom furniture and let me borrow some $$ for the rest.
Only thing we didn't get was a sofa.
It still looks as good today as it did when we bought it. All solid wood. No telling how many furniture shopping trips that stuff has saved. Probably the best bargain on any consumer/household stuff we have ever bought.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

For Leather furniture, make sure it's not "bonded" Leather, which is like a sliver of real leather "bonded" to an underlayment material. Guaranteed to peel and look like crap in a year or two. The internet foam mattress company deals are too good to pass up. Most offer a 100% money back guarantee if you're not satisfied over some time period. We bought this one... http://www.saatvamattress.com/Charlie

We found almost everything we wanted in the stores and then bought it all online. We bought it all for around half of what the local stores "sale" prices. Online also gets you free shipping and no tax. For example, the bedroom suite was $12,500 locally and we bought it online for $3,800. The markup on that stuff is insane.
