Most of ya know I'm not a real died in the wool AR fan, but about a year ago I got a pretty good deal on a Mossberg MMR 5.56 Hunter with a 20" bbl. Put a 3 X 9 X 40 on it and I was really impressed with the accuracy. It shoots better than this old man can hold, but I did manage a couple of dime size groups at 100 yds off the tailgate of my truck.... Now here's the question: Being that it is an AR platform will another brand upper, with the associated charging handle and bolt carrier fit on this thing? (Say for instance 7.62 X 39 or .300 Blackout)

Yes, I have an Olypmic Arms 556, change upper to 7.62x39 from Hardened Arms. All is good, shot 100 rounds so far no probs. You just can't use the larger caliber son AR15 platform.

I learned a long time ago to be careful about using the words never and always when talking about AR stuff. There are manufacturers with proprietary parts now and in the past. AR10 and AR15 uppers and lowers are not interchangeable. The beauty about the AR15 is that one can get the upper set up exactly as they want it, then take off a whole upper and put another upper on there if you want to shoot a different caliber or barrel configuration. Keep your optics attached to the same upper and don't worry about having to reset and readjust them. A few words of wisdom though... if also getting a 300 Blackout, make sure you mark your magazines and don't have both kinds of ammo sitting together when reloading or filling magazines. Getting a 300BO round chambered and fired in a 223/5.56 barrel is going to cause a world of hurt, and it is very easy to do. Technically the barrel is the only thing different when using the 300BO. When you run short barrels and go suppressed or subsonic ammo, one usually changes the spring and bolt carrier group to a lightened one for cycling.

This one has been posted before but goes along with the above picture, a blackout bullet shot in a 5.56 barrel with cutaway showing the bullet in barrel after. Also notice the blown out case head and case still in the chamber. Not sure what happened to the bolt and BCG but would expect they were ruined and hope shooter wasn't hurt

He's not asking about shooting a .300BO out of his .223.

You have discovered something that lots of folks don't know and others don't believe. Mossberg ARs are good shooters ! I have two of them and both will definitely group well enough with Superformance 75 gr, BTHP to cap pigs and coyotes out to 250 yd. I rebarreled one to 6.8 because that is my preferred hog round. Still a shooter !
