My son is getting a bow for Christmas with a draw weight of 40 lbs (to start). I have his package set up with 85 grain field tips and was wondering what would be a good broad head for this weight, mechanical or expandables?

There are several that will work, in that poundage look at the G5 Montec and Magnus stinger.

I personally would stay away from mechanical or expandable, ( same thing ) go with a good cut on contact broadhead. Magnus stinger, VPA, VICTORY POINT ARCHERY ,shoot a heavy arrow, and at least 125 grain broadhead .Forrest

Lots of great heads out there! A good cut on contact would be best ! Not a true COCbut the slicktrick Vipertrick is a great head and penetrates like crazy ! It would work great

I put 85gr Buzzcuts on my son's arrows. They are great for penetration on a low poundage bow

Montec, Muzzy, Thunderhead all come to mind in 85grs.
