PSA. Empty your ice tonight before you go to bed. The ice maker will run water through there several times keeping it from freezing.

I didn't get it either, but I'm feeling safe with ice trays.

In order to generate more water the ice maker needs water. This water will be drawn through your plumbing. Moving water does not freeze as easily.

Could also leave a faucet dripping.

Ahhhh..... I see.

I know about faucets dripping.

I can't imagine an ice maker moving enough water to make a difference.

But what do I know. I have ice trays. LOL

I think I see the point. Kind of. Will it still make ice though...wait, what are we trying to do and not do here?

I think we are using an ice maker to keep things from freezing???????

So.... I'm back to feeling good about my ice trays.

It's like not using an aspirin to cure a headache.

It's either that, or like hitting yourself in the head with a hammer to make the pain go away.

I'm confused now. I think I should give up.

If your refrigerator backs up to an outside wall or connected under the kitchen sink, this would not hurt. Does nothing for hot water lines, however.

Technically, it will make ice faster that way. If you had a bowl of warm water and a bowl of cold water, the warm one will turn to ice first. It has to do with warm water being less stable and so forth. Weird huh?

I'll bet the ice maker supply is hooked up to the hot water supply line. Both cold at that point.

Mr Bill is right most ice makers hooked to hot water side. Empty ice bin takes a few hours to fill up, so it draws water every few minutes and keeps water moving all night. Your hot side has to get water from the cold side to the hot water heater, so the whole system has moving water at points through the night.
