Okay I have large pond about 15 acres with otters living on it. My question is if I kill 3-4 otters can I have fur tanned without a trappers license? I have no plans on selling fur them either.
Way I read it you only can possess a fur bearing animal with a trapper license. It is okay to kill one but one must leave to rot.

I thought it was only with intent to sell... just like a beaver or whatnot... not 100% though... had a friend take one to a taxi and got it mounted... taxi said there was no issues just needed a hunting license

Just got off phone with Tyler office. No trapper license needed to take one. Must bring animal in to office for cites tag if one plans on tanning hide for self.

I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

Last time I shot an otter (years ago), the Austin office didn't have them. Only an office in East Texas (can't remember which one) had them.

Oh I've had them for about 4 years now. I have noticed a decline in smaller fish but not the bigger bass. The problem I'm having with them is making holes in damn and stopping drainage pipe. They did run off my beavers which is the only reason I let them stay.

Holes in dam and plugging pipe?...Sounds like classic beaver damage to me.

One would think so but it's otters. I have old soil conservation lake with a concrete intake. They love getting on top just hanging out. They're aren't blocking pipe on purpose but by accident they drag mud and water grass that ends up blocking it. Now beavers blocked with logs, dirt and all types of crap. Holes in damn, beavers started them I just never seen so many holes open up at once. Plus the holes are much higher than I have ever see on top of damn. Beaver holes where always at water level or below.

Wonder if beaver cavern and tunnels in dam are finally starting to cause subsurface erosion in your dam. We used to call them air holes. Seen numerous earth dams collapse as result...watch out if you drive on dam...seen vehicles fall thru as well. Coons and otters will certainly move in when beavers aren't in there. Wish you well!

Wow guess I need to check on CITES tag because they are so endangered here in Texas.
Cites tags are not used because the river otters are endangered, they are used to ensure that your pelts are indeed from the North American river otter and not other species from South America or Asia at the international auctions that are endangered, And you do not have to have a cites tag if the otter never crosses the state line. If you get the otters tanned in texas then your good, if you send to moyles per say then they need a tag. I usually get about 50 or so tags every year so if you have trouble getting them tagged I'm a licensed propagander and can issue you tags
