Shoot your rifle as much as possible before you leave so you are confident with it when the opportunity presents itself. Shooting sticks and good glass(binos).

A couple or more coolers to bring the meat back in as it can be freezing in the morning and 70 in the afternoon. Handi wipes and rubber gloves for cleaning the deer.

A rangefinder can be very helpful because assessing distance can be deceiving in that terrain.

welcome and good luck. Post your pics in the photo section. You will kill some deer down there. up

That's true about the cooler size. I have a 152 quart so that I can hold 4 deer.

Come on now. Ain't nothing wrong with the Sutton County Steakhouse. Eaten there hundreds of times. (Of course it was, sadly, decades ago.)

Don't get in a hurry. That area is typically a target rich environment. If the shot isn't right. Or you find yourself sizing up a buck..hold off
Another opportunity will present itself usually. I miss my old lease in Sonora

Thank you everyone for all the recommendations. I have a cousin that owns a couple thousand acres out there. We were actually south of Ozona. Great trip. We saw a ton of deer, and several bucks.

I shot a 9-point Tuesday morning and my mother got a Spike this morning.

Unfortunately, since it was my first one, while cleaning, I managed to pretty much butcher it.

I ended up with 2 hind legs and a shoulder.

Does anyone have recommendations on how to practice cleaning one?

Shoot more deer. (Or pigs) Deer cleaning is hands on learning. Bring someone with experience to walk you through it. Only so much you can learn watching a video.

To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.

I watched several videos, and wish the person I was with would have had some experience with it. Watching 5 year old kids gut a deer in 5 minutes tops makes me feel like I was doing something wrong.

I'll be better prepared when the next opportunity arises.

Next adventure will be completing the skull.
