I didn't have my best day of shooting yesterday and my buddy pointed out to me that I may be cross eye dominant. Come to find out after doing the simple eye focus test, I am very left eye dominant and shoot right handed. I have always closed one eye, but I know that is a big no no. There is no way I can change to shooting left handed as I have been shooting right for over 20 years. Curious on any tips or opinions on what to do besides putting tape on shooting glasses. I don't wear them duck hunting...sorry safety enthusiasts.

You said you didn't have your best day yesterday. Are you normally a bad shot and had an exceptionally bad day? Or do you normally do ok or good? I'm the same as you in eye dominance. I did another test and looking down my gun barrel the difference wasn't bad. Pick a spot acoss the room aim and look at it with both eyes open the squint or close left eye. I'm not sure if years of aiming has adjusted itself or if I squint my left eye not fully open not fully closed. I shoot good some days and bad some days.

Why a big no no closing your eye? Do what feels natural to you. If you've shot right handed for 20 years and still think you aren't good at it, then why can't you switch to left. I would think an auto would be an easier switch, a pump may take slightly longer to get used to. I'm left eye dominant, close my left eye and shoot right. I would definitely close my eye over putting tape on the glasses....that would kill any peripheral vision even with gun down. I assume that's what you mean, you'd tape up your left half of the shooting glasses to simulate closing it?

I'm also cross-eye dominant. This summer I shot a lot of trap and tried to teach myself to shoot with both eyes open for the first time. I'm a much better shooter this way and my confidence is way up, too. This has translated to better shooting while hunting this year.

might get some cheap reading glasses. take the right lens out and try shooting some skeet. Or switch sides. Never to late to try

Moe - I'm a decent shot, but I think yesterday I was trying to shoot with both eyes open which is what led to the poor shooting.

Thomas - agreed, going with what feels natural might be my best bet. They say shooting with both eyes open gives you better depth perception. This is why they say put tape on your shooting glasses so you can keep both eyes open, but it prevents you from looking down the left side of the barrel.

Scotch tape on glasses still allows in light but won't allow your left eye to focus, so your right eye will be doing the work. P_102

Lot of folks are eye cross dominant. You can get some Vaseline and smear on dominant eye lense of glasses

All you need is a small 1/8 X 1/8 square piece of tape in line with your pupil and end of barrel. You're not looking to obscure most of the vision in that eye.

Same hear right handed but left eye dominate. When I switched from a right hand compound bow to a SELFBOW in 1993 for bowhunting I made the bows lefty. This forced me to use my dominate eye looking over the arrow. But then I had to learn to draw and shoot left handed.

Took me all of 2 weeks to get comfy with the switch....so I would imagine shooting a gun is no big deal...but each person is different I know.

It is not a big no to close one eye and probably very important if cross eye dominant. I am also cross eye dominant (left eye, right hand shooter) and must close down the left eye to shoot well. After so many years of doing it this way, I have decided not to change over to left handed shooting, covering my left eyeglass, etc. Most times I miss clays or birds it is because I am not keeping my head down, not my cross dominance.
