Merry Christmas to your family too, Blue moon. Great looking pup. She looks just like our baby "Paluxy", God rest her soul. Border collies\ Aussies are the greatest friends. up

Erathkid – Many thanks. I feel your pain about losing Paluxy; my lab Jessie crossed the rainbow awhile back and the wound still stings.

Regarding our mini Aussie, we added Sydney to our tribe about 8 years ago when she was already six months old. She was living in a barn at the time, owned by a rancher and Aussie breeder that was planning to use her as part of her mini Aussie breeding program until the financial train wreck known as 2008 happened.

Sydney was born a mini Aussie but in 2015 the breed was accepted into the AKC and the lords of the ring now officially refer to mini Aussie’s as mini American Shepherds for anyone considering a pup. Politics in the AKC reigns supreme over common sense.

Sydney has been a fantastic little dog and the favorite birthday gift I’ve ever given my sweetheart. She’s super smart and never once has gotten into indoor mischief. I trained Jessie and Jessie trained Sydney. My job was easy. She’s 24 pounds and 16 or so inches tall with attractive black-tri markings. She’s a great indoor size and easy to travel with.

When Sydney was six she developed a heart murmur that we’ve kept a close eye on. It didn’t slow her down. She kept running the obstacle course like the wind and instinctively herded livestock and people. She’s been magical to watch. In her own way she’s just as impressive as Jessie, a fabulous, once in a lifetime waterdog, that made impossible retrieves and seemed to understand English better than most of my well educated hunting buddies.

For Christmas my wife and I focused on handcrafted gifts for each other. As Christmas neared, Sydney developed the telltale cough that forewarns family heartbreak is on the horizon. After calling our vet to make an appointment, I had Sydney pose for the portrait so I would have something memorable to give my sweetheart for Christmas.

Her heart problem is breaking ours. We have a great vet and Sydney is taking heart meds that will help her enjoy the twilight of her life but they can’t stop the sun from setting… While our vet has warned us her life will be shorter than we hoped, we’d do it all over again for just a fraction of the joy she's given us so far. In the meantime, we're making sure she enjoys every moment on the journey ahead.
