Got out this morning and discovered that my lanyard was not in my bag. I'm not hunting on what anyone would call the X I don't believe that I'm not very good at calling but to me that just feels more like duck hunting. I normally don't shoot unless feet are down but after the 5th group passed by without any of them paying much attention I gave in and shot passersby ducks. Any of y'all go without calling at all?

Almost all of our shots are ducks passing by down in a creek bottom

I've had plenty of hunts where I've had my calls but never touched them. When they want to be there and like what they see it's you need.

I hunt a few small ponds and a creek bottom and never carry my calls with me.

A wise old duck hunter put it to me this way: By the time they get to Texas, they've been called at and shot at the whole way down from Canada.
I suck at calling anyway, but the only time I use it is if the ducks are high and I don't think they have even seen the hole I'm hunting. It's nothing more than to turn their heads so they have a chance at seeing the hole and the decoys. I think ducks will go where they want to go and avoid the places they don't like, so calling them (in my opinion) is nothing more than making them aware so they can make whatever choice they're going to make.
Once they take a look, I let them do their thing. I think all this chattering the entire time they're working is for the hunter more than it is for the birds.

Kilo sounds about right to me. The calling is maybe more about me than the ducks. When I want ducks to look at my location I call. When ducks turn to go I try to change there minds. When there around I quack a little. This seems to keep them interested usually. Calling just seem to make me more of a part of the out come ( good or bad ). I guess it's always going to seem like if I don't call and the duck don't come in than I should have called. Then if I call and the duck flare well I called to much. ( Yes I have fun over thinking my hunts)

All the time. As a matter of fact, couple weeks ago I hunted with no decoys and no calls and still shot birds. The most decoys I've thrown out this year has been 7, most hunts its 3-5. All about finding what they want, and be willing to try unconventional setups.

I wouldn't have guessed that not calling at all would be a tactic that was used very much. Every time I see ducks in the wild not being hunted they talk to each other so I try to reproduce that sound. I hunt with as little as 3 deeks as many as 60. If there's no decoys and no calling that would be a dove hunt to me. That's like pond jumping ducks. Thats duck shooting not hunting. I think I hunt in spots where ducks don't necessarily want to be but don't mind being.

We never touch a call near the coast. Someone may use a whistle, but we usually laugh at those blowing a mallard hail at pintails and gadwalls.

If there's no decoys and no calling that would be a dove hunt to me. That's like pond jumping ducks. Thats duck shooting not hunting. Shooting them on the water is a duck shoot, waiting for them to come in and shooting them without decoys or calls isn't. Saying that is a shoot, is like saying that a guy setting up off a game trail and shooting a deer without a feeder or calling them up isn't hunting.

Close. I hunted deer that way for 20 plus years most of that bow hunting. The art of getting ducks to come to me and land or at least cup up where I want them is the hunt for me. Juat my honest opinion. Just finding a place where the ducks are going to land or fly over and shoot them seem the same as picking a good flight path and tree line and shoot dove. Lots of fun and I enjoy it but not the same as talking to a mallard as it circles with in range and then decides it's safe and drops in the hole you picked. I would like to go with someone one day and see ducks do that with no calling but I'm still to new to this. I'm on my 7th season but I know what I like about waterfowl. Thanks for the information I really appreciate it. This forum is the only way I have to learn different things.
