Took this guy in the frigid temps yesterday and I realized after I brought it back that it had almost no color on the bill. Is this a yearling bird? Anyone have some knowledge/experience with whistlers?

Arguably the best tasting of all North American ducks, they are usually way South by this time of the year. They are gregarious and are rarely seen or shot as a loner.

Yes hatched in 2016. Could be one I raised up here in Oklahoma.

I thought it was incredibly odd that it was by itself. I've hunted the property 7 times this year and have never seen others.

I haven't seen them in my area since late October, it's weird some of them hang out on top of the roofs.

There has been a group of 30+ at my dock on CCL for a month now. They were recently joined by a bunch of mallards.

It may have a lot to do with being a juvenile, but it seems like the handful that I've shot lost the orange color pretty quick after giving up the ghost. Almost like the blood drained out of the bill or something...
