So the missus and i are moving along with planning our trip from kentucky to hunt south texas december 2017. We are going to include a trip to Guadalupe Mtns. in the days prior to the hunt. My question is how many days should i allocate to have enough time to hit the highlights there? I know this might be the wrong place to post this but im hoping it gets a lot of looks. Thanks in advance for any help.

Two days. If you're gonna hike Guadalupe Peak, leave at daylight. It'll take most of the day up there and back. We went to the office/gift shop first. rolleyes Big mistake.

I recently watched a TPWD show on PBS about a guy who is cutting trails out there. Yeah he is in his 70's and cutting trail with a few hand tools. He works slowly because of his age but he is doing it just to keep his body in motion. He was saying he may only move a few feet in a week. Now he isn't working 12 hour days out there busting hump but I applaud him for his volunteering effort.

As stated, leave at sunup. Take 3 liters of water per person even if you don't think you will need it. This time of year, take a decent quality, water and windproof outer layer, top and pants, no matter what the forecast and weather conditions when you leave the parking lot. Winds can be very high, in excess of 50 mph on the exposed ridge line near the top. Snow and ice are very real possibilities in the winter.

Have a great time. Here are a few photos of what to expect.

Ridge line to top.

Parking lot from about 1/3 of the way up.

Desert floor below.

Trail higher up.

The top of the peak.

The Guadalupe's are a long ways from South Texas but Maps takes care of that. To get to South Texas you might consider taking the time to get to Alpine and then drive US 90 down to Del Rio - Brackettville - Uvalde branching off where needed to head deeper int0 South Texas. Not much along the drive but broken country and the solitude it offers but it is worth seeing. Beats taking I-10 to San Antonio.

You're very welcome.

Forgot to add, wear sturdy heavy soled boots.

Running shoes and sneakers are not adequate to protect the feet walking on the sharp rocks, especially in the winter.

It is a very full day of hiking, not particularly technical, but definitely a very solid workout.

The boys and I hiked it a few years ago (my youngest is now 18 and a senior in high school). The walk to the top is well worth the effort....

This November we hiked to Smith Spring just above the old Frijole Ranch house.
It is a fairly easy hike about 2.5 miles round trip. We really enjoyed it.

No kidding. I'm ready to leave now. Great pics everyone. Those tranquil pools with Madrones and bigtooth Maples are especially nice. Good job, guys.

You'll need to plan a full day of driving from Guadalupe Mountains back to S. TX. It's quite a haul.

This trip , barring any unforseen hickups, will take place in December 2017. We hope to have 2 full weeks to sightsee and finish the trip with a nilgai hunt and then return home. Ideally we plan on the trip west taking us across north texas, towards Guadalupe, then south towards Raymondvill to hunt and sightsee Padre Islands. Is there anything else i should put on the must see list? Ive seen the Alamo when i was stationed in San Antonio. Thanks for all the help

Definitely down to US90 and along then east to Uvalde. From this point it kind of depends what you want but better missions are at Goliad, I know the Alamo is what it is but the Goliad mission are able to take you back without the city stuff interfering. Goliad also puts you on US183 which a bit further south merges with US77 to Raymondville.

I musta missed what there is to see in Pecos.

OP is definitely covering "miles and miles of Texas".

Texas Ranger Museum in Waco. The area around the Pearl in San Antonio. It's probably changed a whole bunch since you were stationed here.

Kings Inn seafood restaurant in Riviera, TX, 60 miles north of Raymondville.

The King Ranch.
