Have a Tikka T3 in 7/08 & a Varmint in 22-250 & I've been very pleased with both.. Everything is factory except for the stock on the 7/08 (no trigger work) & only shoot factory ammo for now.. Few days ago I took it out to see how this 10" .30cal can would sound on it and started having light primer strikes on every round (not enough to fire the round).. The firing pin was releasing with about 1/3 of the normal power.. Took it home & started looking for the problem and after giving the interior of the bolt a good cleaning where the firing pin lives it seems to be fine now.. (I've only dry-fired it but the pin releases with much more pop now)..

Thing is, I didn't clean much residue out of the bolt & I'm surprised that just a little bit would've caused an issue.. I've probably got around 200 rounds through the rifle since new and I don't make it a practice to put grease or any other gunk-causing lube on the bolt.. Are Tikkas known to have weak springs? Anyone else run in to this before?

Tikka (Beretta) cautions against putting any type of lube on the firing pin. If it has been a bit since it was cleaned there might have been some debris in there.

To answer your question, I have never heard of any firing pin spring problems with a Tikka. We've never had any issues with ours.

I've had 5-6 Tikkas going back 20 years and never had this issue. I do douche them out with Kroil though when I get a new one.

Did you buy it new? If so, did your strip the bolt and clean it?

Could be some packing greese in there. I've never heard of light primer strikes with Tikkas but that doesn't mean it's impossible. I knew a guy who "knew everything" about cleaning guns. He used to put Rem oil in the firing pin hole when he cleaned his gun. His rifle would not fire sometimes, and of course he would blame it on hard primers...

Bought it new but I don't know that I ever would've thought to remove the firing pin & clean inside the bolt.. So that had probably never been done prior to yesterday..

I've never had a problem with mine and haven't heard of anyone else having that problem.

Edit: Mine is a .308, not 7mm-08, if that makes a difference.

I'd disassemble and give it a good look, both the firing pin and inside the bolt.

Is it possibly the ammo? That looks like a pretty good hit on the round, I would think enough to fire the primer. But then again, never paid attention to the spent casing to see how deep the strike should look.

I'll take it out when the weather clears up but it seems to be fine now.. Cleaning the chamber inside the bolt seems to have worked, I'm just surprised that just a small bit of residue would cause a problem..

It's not a great picture, I should've held it at more of an angle.. It's actually not nearly as deep as it looks.. Did try several different brands of ammo..

What brand ammo? Same results with each brand you tried?

Never had any trouble with mine Travis, with either factory or reloads.
