Just ordered a 1/8 twist flute 3b Bartlein barrel to build a 6.5X284 Norma. Anyone have any tips for this caliber?

Have 2 that were built for me. The smith cut the chamber a bit short of the Norma length n said that it might add some life to the barrel. I have long actions and seat the 130 Accubonds out pretty far. One shoots very well with a load that was worked up and I have quite figured out what I am doing, load wise, with the other. It worked well on the cow elk I took with it. My barrel is not a 1/8 though.

Use a long action.
Mine was built on a short Remington 700 and to fit in the magazine 140 grain bullets have to be seated deeper than I would like.

Thanks for the info. I am building on a long action and going to focus my attention on the 130 accubonds.

Not sure what powder you will use but the load I worked up was with Reloader 19. I am in the experimentation phase for the 2nd one but with an ELD. I might switch back to the Accubonds though. You can definitely do much more with the long action.

I'm going to start with H4350 because that's what I shoot in my 25-06 and 30-06.

H4831 is a very popular powder for the 6.5-284 Norma and is the only powder I have used so far, but I shoot 140s from it. The 140s will help some with barrel life over the 130s. For max velocities with the 140s look at H1000.

Really like the caliber and in my Cooper accuracy is outstanding. In load workup over 4 grains of H4381SC no group was over 1 inch at 100 yards and settled on 2 loads one at 2700fps and the other just over 2900. Both shot 5/8 inch groups at 200 yards which is about as good as I can shoot.

RLUM - Went to the range this past week with loads that I worked up. I used 4451 and got good results with the 143 ELDX and 140 Accubonds. Going to go out this coming week and try to verify what I did. Both were less than .75.

I haven't tried the 4831 Kmon1 but I have some so I will give it a go. I am not going to try to push anything too hot in this rifle but can you give me an idea where you started with the load you did?

If you are planning on a long action, you will need to plan out your ammo with your gun smith with the bullet you plan to shoot. There's 2 types of 6.5x284 rifles out there- rifles built on short actions (traditional), and rifles build on long actions (for hot rods). The rifles built on short actions that feed from the magazine will have a max COAL of about 2.860-2.880". This limits the type of bullet and which powder is used. These short action 6.5-284's will generally use 4350 or 4831. Speeds are generally in the 2900 fps range for 140 grain bullets.

On the long action rifles, most guys run a 140 grain seated out very long to around 3.200-3.350" ish. This allows the bullet to seat out long, increase your case capacity for a slow burning powder of H1000 or Retumbo, and run a 140 grain bullet much faster. You will need to work this out with your gun smith for you chamber on where you plan to seat the bullets so he can throat the chamber where you want it. He may need some dummy rounds with the bullet you want to shoot. The load data for the short action rounds will not help you if you build it on a long action. IMO, if you go long action, I'd run the 140's to get the higher BC and heavier bullets.

Very good info Chad. My 130 Accubonds are being pushed with 55 grains of RL19 My COAL with those is 3.150 and that is with the chambering cut short of the full Norma configuration. This thread has my curiosity up so I may try some 140's with it to see what I can get.

Thank you Chad. I will look into the 140's.
