Went out with buddies last night to hunt hogs in Montague County. I served as the backup and secondary shooter, James being the primary. We got onto hogs 3 times. We shot at 5 hogs. We killed 5 hogs. The bonus riders were 9 on board with a 270 lb sow James shot and 4 more on a 210 lb sow I shot. After we parted, company, James managed to take a coyote as well. James was shooting a Reap-IR on his 6.8 and really likes it. I got to look through it for a bit and was impressed with how will it performs. I am not sure about the non-specific S&B poly tip ammo he was shooting, however. I was using a Sig Sauer Echo 1 on a .50 Beowulf, shooting some Hornady FTX 300 gr. bullets (1900 fps) that performed well. I had spent the morning checking out 5 different loads and the FTX was the best option to hunt with last evening. It did some significant damage and put down the hogs despite one of the shots being too high. Here is the video. It is a bit long, but has 3 separate hunts ...

Whoo-Hoo, and a good time was had by all … with the exception of the hogs and one coyote!
Great Video! --

Good job guys. Thanks! You know, I have shot 3 hogs with the Beowulf so far, two different loads, 70-110 yards, and the performance has been nothing less than impressive, though no doubt bullet choice has a lot to do with the damage I am seeing.

Good job guys. Thanks! You know, I have shot 3 hogs with the Beowulf so far, two different loads, 70-110 yards, and the performance has been nothing less than impressive, though no doubt bullet choice has a lot to do with the damage I am seeing. Yes, bullet performance will vary with distance and shot placement but all will do considerable damage. Both the Beowulf and SOCOM have a 'sweet spot' in terms of bullet weight, energy and performance on hog sized critters. Most agree that 300 grain to 400 grain bullets are where both cartridges really shine. The 300-350 grain bullets will do a good job on hogs under most conditions. But I have settled on the 405 gr.Remington Soft Point as my staple load in my SOCOM. Sierra makes a similar bullet for the Beowulf: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/816442/...point-box-of-50If you want to just 'kill' hogs...any of the 300 grain bullets (properly placed) will do the job. If you want to PUNISH a hog (while also killing it), step up to a 400 grain soft point. You should be able to push it to between 1650 and 1725 fps (muzzle) using Reloder-7 or H-110. Unless you are right on top of the hog...you will hear the bullet strike almost every time. Nothing but silence after that. It knocks the squeal right out of them, so don't expect to hear that. Keep after them and thanks for sharing your experience. Flint.

For those interested, here is the necropsy on the Beowulf hogs. On the sow, I cannot figure out what is going on. there is a smaller permanent wound under where the entry wound is on the hide and it travels through to where the exit wound is on the opposite side. Then there is a large bit of tissue that is destroyed that is below that and further back, almost like the bullet came apart into two sections. There was was only 1 entry wound on the hog and one exit wound. Odd.

Like it! Hope you will have an opportunity to continue using the Beo on hogs. At some point you'll probably be able to recover some bullets. And don't be afraid to take quartering shots (facing or going away). The heavy big bores give you that advantage (shot angles). Hogs facing you can be shot high in the chest...to good effect. I've also shot stationary hogs right at the base of the tail on occasion. Sometimes a follow up shot is needed if you do that, but most other angles are a one shot affair. Good job.

I Feed Indian Corn. The deer love it and all the colors make them stay at the feeder longer.
