It's been awhile since I duck hunted but I will have several opportunities this year. I always set my spread in a horseshoe shape but can't remember how to orient them. Is it open side towards the direction the wind is blowing from? What type of spread do you guys use that might be different from mine?

Try setting your decoys in 2 groups. One to the left, one to the right and leave some space between them to act as a landing zone. This is a pretty versital spread and can be adjusted depending on the wind. For example, if you are forced to hunt a cross wind that is blowing right to left, make the group on the right larger than the group on the left to pull the birds all the way across the blind. Of course a wind blowing at your back is always preferable, but not always possible.

If you use a horseshoe put the the closed end UPWIND. Ducks land into the wind.

Google pictures of live ducks feeding or loafing and try to resemble that.

I think as the season goes on the birds get wary of neat little shapes and lines of decoys. You just need to make sure you have a group of decoys blocking them from landing too far upwind of where you can shoot.

Just all depends on which way the wind is coming in from whether I have the wind to my back or I am having to hunt a cross wind. When I have the wind at my back i will either us a "U" or set one group on the left and group on the right not connecting and leaving a big pocket in the middle usually my pocket 10-15 yards from side to side. Now if I have a crosswind depending on which side it is coming from I will run a "J" almost looking like a NIKE check having the longer part of the check upwind, so that it creates almost a wall for them to suck into the the point on the check.

Google pictures of live ducks feeding or loafing and try to resemble that. This is good advice. I'll often do two groups. One large to get some attention and then just a couple where I want the birds will lane (or think they well) and find they usually go for the small group.

Deeks on both sides of where you want them to land and adjust from there.
