I thought something was wrong but I didn't know what was happening until it was too late.I clicked on a page to check on something and the puter was struggling along so I waited, and waited for it to catch up.I noticed the HD light was on for several minutes and google said it wasn't responding. As a matter of fact nothing was responding but I had the option to wait or close so I chose to close and google closed everything.Ok,i'll do a restart and start everything all over ,that was about 5 hrs ago frown Now I finally got to the C: prompt and seems I have lost everything on that computer, all my pics, files, everything is lost. Now i'm my old pc but at least it's working up Now I need to see if somebody can maybe restore the other one to a earlier date or at least get my pics and files off it.

If it's Win 7 hit F8 on boot and choose Last Known Good Configuration. If it's Win8 or 10 pull the power plug when it starts booting Windows and the third time of doing this you will get recovery options.

This reminds me that I need to backup all my stuff. It's been about a year.

Actually I did a backup of all files and pics up to the end of Dec 2015 I think. But all pics of the new truck,RV and golf cart I didn't back up or the new passwords.I managed to get into the C:\ prompt and it shows 23 files and no directories but at one point I think I saw 3 partitions so maybe somebody with more experience than me can recover everything.

Maybe reboot in safe mode (F7)???

Might get you back in to get some files before wiping her clean.

It wont let me do f7 or any f anything except testing then when that is done it says "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer."
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

then some more technical. Then it wants to load windows to fix the startup programs and that's as far as the hard drive wants to spin.

If you can get to another computer that has the same OS on it, make a rescue disk on that one and try to boot with it on the bad one. May have to change the boot option in CMOS but it should work.

A while back, my PC died in a hurry. Got lots of warnings from the PC, so I did my best to copy stuff to a secondary drive. Thought I made it, but didn't, but did not know that I had failed. Got a new computer and downloaded all the stuff from the extra drive. Was missing some important stuff. I HAD saved the hard drive from the old dead PC, but thought that it was dead and worthless. But...I took it to the Geek Squad at Best Buy and they retrieved EVERYTHING. Thank goodness.

That was the second time I had lost a hard drive. This time I decided to go with no moving parts. Got a really big Solid State Drive for the new computer and have an old style hard drive in backup mode. And I have a solid state digital satellite drive too. A big un.

The new SSD is way faster to come on line than the old drive. I am happy. But...something will screw up sooner or later...always does.

I use these things all the time when drives are about to fail or shortly after they actually do.

Take your hard drive out, hook it up to this adapter, then plug it into another computer via USB.

It will just act as if you plugged in a flash drive.

From there you can go into your hard drive and dig around.

Sometimes the computer has issues of booting your damaged hard drive which doesn't let you go any further.

Using this tool you don't have to worry about the boot process.

You can repair a Windows 8 or 10 PC with a DVD of the operating system.

1. If you do not have a Windows 8 or Windows 10 DVD, download on a different PC and create a system DVD.
2. Place the Windows 8 or Windows 10 DVD and reboot the Windows operating system.
Note: If you can’t boot from the Windows DVD then you will have to go in the BIOS options of your device and be sure you have the option to boot from the CD/DVD selected and enabled.
3. After the operating system powers up you will get to a “Windows setup” page.
4. Select the appropriate “language to install” and also the “keyboard or input method”.
5. After you selected the features above you need to left click or tap on the “next” button.
6. Left click or tap on the “Repair your computer” feature in the next window.
7. Left click or tap on the “Troubleshoot” feature.
8. Left click or tap on the “Advanced options” button.
9. Left click or tap on the “Automatic repair” button.
10. Select the Windows 8 or Windows 10 operating system you wish to repair.
11. Let the automatic repair process run and after it is finished reboot again without the Windows 8 or Windows 10 DVD and check if you still get the “no boot device available” message.

Get rid of the old geezer, buy a decent new one Intel quad core i5 or better.
Load it up with the best virus software, I use norton, there are others that are good.

Then once you did that, buy a hardrive USB kit, like this one

https://www.amazon.com/Drive-Adapter-Converter-Optical-External/dp/B002OV1VJW

Attach the old harddrive to the new computer via USB. Run a virus scan on it and see what's
up. If it needs to format it, the drive is toast anyway. If it fixes viruses on it, you can get your
old files off right then and there. If there are no viruses but you can see it, that means something
else was probably wrong with your old computer and it was toast anyway, grab you old files and enjow
your new computer. If it does fix virus issues, your old computer may work if you put it back together,
and if it does you can give it to a nice young family member.

I'm 50% sure I just wasted my time writing this up loco_too
