How many folks have you seen open carrying? I saw my second at fish shack here in Plano. Nobody freaked out.

How many have y'all seen?

I saw my first one a last month or so at Academy in Frisco, Dude looked like a total douchebag.

He kept looking around to see if people were watching him.

I've OC'd a few times since the law passed. Rarely does anyone notice, once turned into a conversation and the employees at my car wash said they were happy to have people armed around and it made them feel safer. I've seen a few people, mainly at academy or cabelas.

Main takeaway is that the sky isn't falling and nothing that the naysayers said came true.

My oil change guy open carries. I asked him what he was carrying and spoke for a few minutes about different guns, cool. Then I told him what I was carrying (concealed) and talked about that, then he went right back to changing oil. Doesn't bother me one bit.

0 and have only heard of 2 or three even in the surounding towns. You never see the long guns carryed openly in this neck of the woods ether.

I thought I saw about a dozen open-carriers at Rudy's BBQ in Waco last week, then I realized it was Wednesday and it was just the entire plain clothes officers crowd that has been eating there every Wednesday at 11:20 since they opened. I do wish they'd make them cover those horizontal holsters, though. I know it's perfectly safe, but something about having a 1911 pointed at your chest while in line for lunch just doesn't sit right. Call me crazy...

Have see one at Academy. If he has done or been to half the places he was bragging about he is one bad mofo. Sounded like he has worked for every branch of law enforcement and military in the US. My daughter said she smelled BS and I agreed.

I hate working with detectives that wear shoulder holster. Standing behind them when they draw and staring straight down the barrel with scare the chit out of you

Got a funny story you'll appreciate BP. I was at Rudy's about 6 months ago getting Que for The Crew and I was in line behind a mix of plain clothes and uniforms. THere was a female officer in uniform, a little overweight, and just kinda' ditty-bopping around to the music in her head. Strange chick....Anyway, I noticed all the other officers' weapons, of course, had magazines inserted, while her magazine well was empty. I quietly asked the uniformed officer in front of me, "Hey, none of my business, just curious, why are y'all all loaded and she's not?" He leans back and says quietly, "Well look at her!!" We had a good chuckle, then he explained it was just a phase in training between blue gun and loaded gun. I got the idea most of them were praying she'd wash out.

I've seen exactly zero.

I open carry whenever I'm on my motorcycle, though. For one, I prefer to have my shirts tucked in when I ride. Also, folks tend to be a whole lot more gracious and considerate of giving me my safe space when they see my .45 ACP hanging in the wind.

safe space? I can tell you 90% of people will never see your gun while riding bc they are too busy playing on their phones as they pass you.

That's laughable. Most won't even see it, and the few that do, most won't be able to tell what caliber it is.

I've seen close to a dozen here in Abilene
I OC quite a bit now that its warmer and I can wear just a tee shirt and I tuck the shirt between the gun and my hip because otherwise it rubs my skin and gets sweaty

I had one bad experiance with a jerk in Lowes making a comment about him being retired law enforcment and that not everyone should be open carrying like that
I politely told him to mind his own business and get out of my face

when I got to the check out, he had been ahead of me and the cashier said he had been a jerk to her earlier and she sent him inside for the manager to deal with
so, I just chalked that up to him being an a$$
I should have known he was going to be trouble, be was wearing white pants and a straw fedora

I don't trust anyone dressed like that

I open carry sometimes depending on where I am or wearing. Have yet to have someone approach me and say anything negative. Plenty have stated they support it and feel good knowing someone is legally armed. flag

Funny that many of us, me included, have seen zero. And I frequent places where you would think they would be common - rural diners, sporting goods shops, etc.

I am still at one, I did see a another cat carrying yesterday at QT.

I saw some plain clothes dude carrying yesterday, but he had a set of handcuff on the other hip so I assume he was either taking it to a new level or he worked in some type of law enforcement. He was acting normal and not looking all around looking for attention.

I've seen two here in Ponder, Funny thing is one of them I hardly noticed and the other looked liked they were itching for attention. I have no issues with open carry but I definitely prefer to conceal.

I've seen one that was partially concealed like this. What I like most about open carry, is that I no longer worry about my shirt riding up and revealing my weapon when I am reaching up for something on the top shelf of a store.

I have one friend who open carries, but it is under his shirt and usually just the barrel is showing. The only other person I have seen o/c is another friend who didn't know he had to have an LTC and was thankful I showed him the error of his ways. One store I used to patronize has a 30.06 sign but their 30.07 sign they had fell down and they haven't put it back up. I tried to tell them of the error but they don't care and I stopped shopping there.

Today was my first sighting, coming out of Lowes in Sulphur Springs. He looked about like one of those guys we used to see on the news carrying AKs and ARs in restaurants in Dallas just to prove that they could. He came waddling out the front door proudly toting a 1911 in a leather holster.

Grand total of 3. I actually saw a dude carrying at Central Market on Greenville. I must admit that one was the most shocking.

A local church had an LTC class. There were 4 people (including the instructor and the preacher) open carrying inside and outside the church. That's the only time I have noticed anyone open carrying.

I want to carry my side arm while hunting SHNF. I've never hunted there So I called the number in the public hunting book. The lady said I could not carry unless I had a CCW license. Is this right or is she not applying the law correctly? Thanks. I'm new to the forum and excited to see your thoughts.

That is correct if you don't have a CHL/LTC you can not carry on public land like Corp land

A friend saw one in Dairy Queen right after it passed. He didn't watch the OC guy, he watched for reactions from everyone else. Nobody cared at all and didn't pay him any special attention. I think people in Central Texas are used to having or seeing hip holsters while on the ranches so it's not a big deal to them. Lot different than close to the major cities.

It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

Saw my first at Chick Fil A in Sherman today. Well dressed Vet with a Korean War Veteran hat. Very nice 1911 too. I thanked him for his service as he walked by and he went on his way.

2 separate sighting for me. Both looked like chubby mall cops, but weren't mall copping at the time I saw them. They were shopping with their family.

This forum is still on-line? It has been a year since this law came into effect and the world has not ended as we know it? Next thing I am going to be told is Trump is my President!

Shocking isn't it. As usual the fear mongers failed with an agenda that most logical people knew was misguided. I laugh on a daily basis when I hear about people feeling unsafe around people open carrying. I try to remind them that it is almost a guarantee daily they run into someone who is carrying concealed and nothing happens but they would rather stick their head in the sand than face facts.

Zero have I seen, even though I have open carried walking from motel to truck going to deer lease. But other than that, I always have a jacket/windbreaker over my glock. No one in the La Quinta ever said a word if they even noticed.

I've seen two. One made a quick dash from his truck to the store to pay for gas and the other in front of Walmart strutting around with a nickle Colt 1911 with fake ivory grips and some kind of gold emblem in the grip. No thumb strap and riding so far back behind the hip he couldn't protect it if he had to.

I have open carried twice... Both times as seedy gas stations. I shouldn't have stopped at either but i really needed gas and didn"t see any other options. I really don't think anyone saw or noticed me or my sidearm.

Nobody does it except attention-seekers. The law was unnecessary to start with.

Have to agree. Attention is the last thing I want, not much advantage in it. Watched a video the other day of a man of a man standing in line and a guy come up from behind and grabbed his pistol and ran out the door.

I will raise you one and say that there is NO advantage to that kind of attention in a city. But we all know that a concealed weapon can have many advantages.

Growing up on a ranch in Northern California when open carry was legal and commonplace, I never understood overly strong reactions to it.

Just saw my second. In Wal Mart. Tacticool doob carrying a Hi-Point. How do I know? He was actually wearing a Hi-Point tee shirt. I think it said "I'm carrying a Hi-Point" or "My pistol is a Hi-Point" on the front.

I'm not joking.

The only real advantage to the law is that if you are strapped and you accidentally expose your gun you won't get in trouble now. Before you might have.

I have on a couple of occasions carried semi open when travelling thru bad neighborhoods...Like Dallas.
I will wear it outside but cover it with my tee-shirt. If anyone ever noticed I never caught a reaction.

I saw a truck driver at the Loves truck stop in Hearne a few days ago.....walking around with some plastic gun (probably a glock) in a simple leather belt holster...kinda like the ones cowboys used with ZERO retention! I just shook my head....begging for someone to walk up behind him and ease it out....and walk away...

The way he was strutting around in there I figure he was all about the show anyway....maybe he is a quick-draw expert...

Only the second one I've seen....

Saw my first one yesterday, at a pawn shop actually. I couldn't tell what he was carrying, black semi-auto, plastic retention holster...picking up an AR15 he'd ordered.

Only seen a couple here in San Antonio. Most recent was the other day at Walmart sporting goods section. I saw a blinking red light on the ground a few feet away from a guy, but didn't know what it was at first. Realized it was a laser from his gun and waited for a discreet moment to let him know it was on.

I have open carried a couple of times but I was always wearing a long shirt and carrying one of my smaller handguns that don't print. I don't need the headache of having to constantly look over my shoulder while exposing what I have. I would rather not let people know what I have. But like others have said, the law was passed and aimed to stop people from getting charged for accidentally exposing their carry guns. I have a screwed up back due to a doctor screwing up my back surgery and will be going in for another corrective surgery soon so IWB tends to hurt these days. So now I use a 5.11 Carry Pistol Pouch when I carry. Seriously easier on my lower back and easy to get to if ever needed. I only open carry when hunting since we have some big hogs and the occasional coyote pass through the property. We shoot them on site during deer season.

My opinion has changed considerably in the last few months after I decided to open carry for one week. I've carried open for several months now and plan to continue. Only one person has said anything and he just introduced himself and gave me his business card, had a gun shop in the DFW area. I carry a 239 SIG in a Ross holster with a thumb snap, rides tight and and unobtrusive.

I am not an advocate of open carry, and have not seen any one here do it (some have stated they do but I have not seen them). We were going to the Friends Of The NRA banquet last summer, I thought surely some one else would be open carying. So I wore a nice western shirt tucked in and carried my LCR .357 mag open.

Yep I was the only one in the place!!!!

I know that I have shown my revolver accidentally, recover it and go on.

Thank You
Robert

I realize the real purposes of the law, but watching someone wander around with one in the open just seems strange to me. I've seen a few guys wearing guns at our local swap meet and in stores. I sort of liken it to a person wanting attention...like putting a ring in their nose, tattooing their faces, etc... No reason to not be a little discrete with the whole concept....but I guess we all have our ways of looking at things.

And the reason for discrete would be? Not trying to be a smart arse, it's a fair question. I asked once before and I'll ask again. Is a person more likely to commit a crime in front of a marked patrol care or an unmarked one? Criminals are not noted for their heroic's.

* Blend in with others around me; do not want to attract attention to myself.
* Do not want to advertise that I'm carrying a firearm.
* Do not wan't to be the bad guy's first target (they will most likely scan the area and eliminate the threat).

For what reason?

Yes a nut job would do this ( also less likely)....most criminal acts would involve robbery or a domestic dispute, perpetrators would see the gun as a deterrent and move along or wait for another opportunity ....an aggressive act on their part is less likely.

Flame suit on.

Carrying a firearm (open or concealed) is a means for me to defend myself. It is not meant for deterrence of any crime.

I conceal carry 99% of time. Was at store in line and was having discussion with a lady and she had noticed the imprint. She asked if she should feel safe since I was carrying( had a tone of attitude in her voice)? Told her only if she had her own means of protection on her, I carry for my safety! Not the stores cash register, if they threaten cashier then will approach that then but most times I'm surviving for #1's sake!

And the reason for discrete would be? Not trying to be a smart arse, it's a fair question. I asked once before and I'll ask again. Is a person more likely to commit a crime in front of a marked patrol care or an unmarked one? Criminals are not noted for their heroic's.

Agreed.

I routinely conceal carry, but depending on what I'm wearing sometimes I open carry for convenience, mostly when I'm in a vehicle.

I think its silly. When the law passed I was more worried about the safety of the people who OC'd than I was anything else.

Like mentioned above, my pistol is for the protection of me and mine. It is there so that I can remove myself from a deadly situation by force if I am unable to do so otherwise. The first and best option for any deadly situation is to get out of harms way as quickly and safely as possible. If I can get out of the situation without ever having to draw my CC, I am the better for it and will do so every time. With a sidearm attached to my waist and exposed to any Tom, Dick, or Sherri who might want to cause a problem, my options of retreat without being noticed are far slimmer.

OC was good for an accidental exposure but since it was passed lots of places I used to shop have put up 30-06 and 30-07 signs. Said if they were going to limit one they would limit both.
Personally I think the value was not worth the cost.

You don't have to be such a jerk about it; a simple "here's one box that isn't so expensive" would suffice. So you found one type of cheap ammo. I was speaking in general and their .223 ammo is still way cheaper. All the ammo I've looked at in the past has been way more expensive. juggle

Most places I have seen put up signs were for 30.07 not 30.06.

And don’t forget that even with a 30.06 sign in place it is only a class C misdemeanor if you happen to get caught. If you are asked to leave and don’t, then it becomes a criminal trespass.

We all have to make choices.
So, I will always carry concealed and if I am doing it right no one is the wiser.

Yes, of course.

I'm old, but I grew up in Northern California ranch country where more than half of the men (and many women)open carried their revolvers. I was really shocked at how backwards Texas gun laws were, when I moved here.

Times have changed, but a gun on the hip still seems as natural as wearing a hat, to me.

I haven't seen any except at gun ranges and in gun stores, which I don't consider counting, but I assume counts.

I saw a guy in a Dickie's BBQ about a month ago, He was open carrying a 3" 1911.

I think he worked for the local school system judging by the conversation he was having with another guy there.

I've posted on this topic a number of times on the TFF. My basic rule of thumb has become to dress more professionally if I'm open carrying. A guy in a blazer, button down shirt, and boots looks alot less 'scary' than a dude in a tshirt and cargo pants when each has a visible sidearm.

Most often, I carry concealed, but unless I'm on campus, I rarely worry about how well concealed it is. I know all the arguments about how the bad guys are gonna go after me first. However, I sincerely believe that it's enough of a deterrent to make them look for easier targets.

Do I know that as a fact? No. But most violent criminals are cowards, and really don't want to risk being shot.

I agree, most criminals, if they suspect someone has a gun,are going to look for easier pickings, They want cash, smokes, booze, they aren't interested in a confrontation they might lose.

Saw a guy at Rudy's in Austin today with the grip/handle of a small revolver sticking out of his front right pocket. Looked kind of strange and out of place, didn't appear to be in any type of holster.

I pretty much open carry in my shoulder rig every time I’m out and sometimes around the house. I’ve gotten used to wearing it. Wore it yesterday to lunch and no body appeared to notice.

Guarantees they will draw the first shot so I have more time to decide what to do.

There is no logical reason for a civilian to openly carry a handgun.

Been working at the ranch all day and had to run into town for a quick errand. Instead of kicking off my muddy boots, going inside, removing my sidearm, and then getting on my way, I just jump in the truck and go. Isn't that a logical reason?

I always wear a shirt when out in the public and conceal my weapon by simply pulling the shirt over it. Pretty easy.

If anyone wants to open carry that's just fine and they should. I just don't like drawing attention to myself.

2 years later and open carry is pretty much a ho-hum, who cares? A few authoritarian lefties got their panties in a bunch and nothing else really happened.

I wear a suit and tie to work everyday, on way home I will stop by the store to run an errand. I do not put my jacket back on because of the heat. So I feel this is a logical reason to OC.

I am not going to untuck my shirt just to cover it up.

Carry on.

They said the same thing was going to happen when concealed carry was passed....campus carry as well.

Yes. Let me restate. No logical reason for a civilian to open carry while in town. Wife and I both open carry when we're on the ranch N of Laredo. Rattlesnakes and such.

Sure is and a damn good one. I choose to and the state has issued me a licence to do so, your input was not needed in that decision or in the agreement.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Actually I think he would make an excellent Governor of our great State, except for the HF stuff. 😊 He knows real work and what it takes to get there, and is not afraid to excercise his rights whether folks like it or not.

I have seen 3 and the first two didn’t bother me. The last one though... Open carry at SWFA in Midlothian and he kept tapping it and looking around as if he wanted someone to say something or he was going to rob the place once a few customers left. Then not an hour later I am grabbing a drink from the gas station and in walks Willy Nilly himself tapping away on his pistol and humming away loudly as if he just scored and life was great.

I have no issue with open carry even though I don’t as I don’t want to give my position away or become the first target of opportunity. But when you do it for attention it becomes an issue and personally a safeless act in my blind eyes.

There is no reason for anyone to own a sports car designed to exceed the speed limit. No reason to own a dog bred to be a fighting breed, etc., etc.,
Personally, I PREFER concealed carry because if someone sees you have a gun on your hip you could get knocked on the noggin so they can get the gun.
BUT...I grew up in a different America. No driver's licenses, no licenses for this or that. Most land not posted. I still cannot get used to living in a regulated society. Back then a lot of towns had a gun check law. Okay to carry in the country and not in a city. That's okay. I'll leave them alone if they leave me alone.

I carry both ways. If in a crowded area I prefer concealed. In a more open area I tend to like open carry better. I do have a retention holster, but I am always watching people and never allow someone near my back when I am open carrying. No one will get within a few feet of my back when I carry open. I do train a lot in more than a few martial arts so I know I can deal with most people in empty hand skills.

I saw my first open carry at McDonalds a few days ago. No one paid him any mind, including the 4 highway patrolmen sitting a couple of tables over. No big deal.

Saw a beautiful family on a Sunday afternoon, at Braums in McKinney, shortly after the law went into effect. The man of the family had a Glock 19 in a Leather holster. My wife said, "that's cool that he's protecting his family".

The second instance was at 10:00 PM on Hwy 289. The motorcyclist next to me had his also in a leather holster with a retention strap. That was early last year.

I haven't seen another since. And I carry everyday.

An open carry idiot was just arrested by Midwestern State Police. He stole a 30.07 sign while open carrying and proceeded to the student center for lunch. He was arrested there shortly thereafter for theft, unlawful open carry of a handgun and possession of weapons in a prohibited area. What a freak.

Well, this guy is obviously not smart enough and shouldn't be allowed to carry openly or concealed.

I have seen very few open carry sightings here in Collin County.

I saw 2 today. One at chic Fila and one at Lowe’s and 1 yesterday at Buccees. I wonder if it’s catching on.

I usually have glock 43 concealed.

I prefer to not let it be seen. I feel like I would become a target if it ever hits the fan.

The guy I saw at chic Fila looked odd. Was in all black, extra mags, loner type.

I was in drive thru, kept waiting for people to run out.

I saw one similarly dressed the other day at a little country store near us. The guy was kinda creepy looking.

If they want open carry to be more normalized, quit dressing like your going out for a rampage.
The Lowe’s guy looked squared away.

I have yet to see it.

I carry every day concealed, and look at everyone in my surroundings.

I can’t remember where it was but I saw a guy like that in black 5.11 pants and boots. The thing that really got me was that he was standing at the back of his trunk putting he’s gun and extra mags on is belt and I was like alright. Once we were inside I noticed that he had a badge on his belt but I didn’t check to see what agency it was.

Last I remember seeing it was a little sawed off dude about 5’6” typical 9-5 desk jockey looking guy with aviator sunglasses and a polo shirt from 1995, obvious case of little man syndrome but that full size 1911 down to his knee with 2 extra mags made him feel good.

One of the main reasons I won't open carry. No aviator glasses but at 5'6" and an old I would probably be an easy mark for someone wanting to prove a point about open carry. I prefer to stay concealed and not to be a threat in case it hits the fan.

I just don't think I'd want to have the attention drawn to me that open carrying would do. Some guys seem to like the attention...but not me.

We are in Cody, WY for the summer and I see it every time we get into town, 2 or 3 each trip in. At Church Sunday, then at restaurant and then at Ace Hdwe.

Last Saturday morning I saw a guy walking down Independence in Plano dressed in a suit. He was holding his coat (I don't blame him, it was getting warm) thus you could see he was carrying. No big deal.

I haven't seen an open carry yet.

I have enjoyed carrying outside of the waistband and lazily throwing a shirt over it. This in my opinion is the best thing about open carry is the fact that I personally don't care if it is seen. I know that printing wasn't an issue before the law change but it has eased my mind.

Yes, I am posting to an old thread - because over the last couple of months, I am suddenly seeing more and more open carry. It has gone from pretty rare, to every few days, with a mixture of people types - and gun types. Not the same people each time. It has clearly been ramping up.

Just this week, a guy in a restaurant with a full sized stainless 1911. (Obvious call for attention)
A 40-something year old gal with a snub nose revolver on her hip, leaving the boat repair shop.
Saturday, a guy in his 50's wearing a compact pistol in the hardware store.

I am trying to figure out what is driving this change.

Are you thinking that this summer is hotter than previous? I am sensing some sort of attitude shift.

Actually think this summer is a little cooler than the past couple. I just think all the drama of open carry is long past and people are becoming more casual about it. Cooler weather makes carrying concealed easier...Jes my 2cents

I have seen one and it wasn't in Texas. I went on a trip this summer to Georgia and noticed a guy carrying when I went to Wal-Mart. I didn't know they had open carry.

Yea...even I did open carry, which I don't, there is NO effn way I would open carry (handgun or long gun) anywhere right now. Especially in Walmart. People are going to freak out and chit will hit the fan. You might beat the wrap but you're not going to beat the initial freak out reaction.

You mean like this DA? He’s lucky he didn’t get shot.

Exactly. And remember those DA people from a few years ago carrying long guns everywhere? Try that today, even though it's legal you are going to be met with a swift police response and you with make the national news.

I open carry every day. Got a custom shoulder holster built so I can carry my G17 suppressed on strong side and my G19 on week side.

I look like a BAMF
