I have an opportunity to buy a Browning a-bolt medallion in the 260 cal. I am not familiar with this size gun. The deer I shoot are no farther than 200 yards. Would this size rifle be good? If so what weight bullet is best? Thanks for any information.

I do. Dropped each one ive hit right. 120 and 140 grain is all I can find. I like the rem accu-tip in the 140 grain.

Should be perfect for your use. The only caveat is that it is not an excessively popular cartridge so you may have to look a while to find ammo...and perhaps stock up when you find it.

I am buying one saturday, so give me a few months!

Look into Midway USA, they have a ton of ammo in 260.

Federal makes several rounds now as well as remmy

It is the modern version of the 6.5x55 swedish and that is a fine cartridge. You should have no trouble killing whitetail out to 250 or so, which is the outside most people will shoot at or are comfortable with.

The .260 is a phenomenal round. It is a .308W necked down to .264 and is one of my main competition rounds.

When using a 140gr VLD it has ballistics similar to a .300WM but with little recoil and on a short action. At my elevation (680' ASL) I can make a .260 stay supersonic to just a little past 1500 yards.

There is a very good selection of 6.5mm (.264) bullets to choose from. The 140VLDs are also very good hunting rounds unlike other match rounds.

The 260 was a flop! Remington spent too much money hoping on trying to make it a go to whitetail caliber. But never really caught on! To many people would rather go with the 7mm 08 or 308 for a short action round. Thats probably why there's tons of ammo available. But get it why you can!

I guess the .243 (.308W necked down to a 6mm) flopped too. The .260 has only been around since 97. The .243 since 1955 and the 7mm-08 since 1958/1980 depending to what you subscribe to.

I'll put my .260 against your 7-08 or .308 any day at any target out to 1500 yards.

Put a $100 on it and I'll give you directions to my private range and we can shoot my steel out to whatever range you want. In fact, I'll put put 3 .260 competition shooters (me being one) to your one rifle. You stand to lose $100 or gain $300. Bring a camera.

Thanks for all the information. I think I will buy the gun. I probably will try to get several boxes of ammo just to be safe.

Are you having to aim at the moon to hit a target at 1500 yards with a subsonic load?

I would choose anything long action for hunting over anything short action. If I owned any guns that is since I sold them all at the Denton gun show the other day I guess my opinion doesnt really matter.

NTRP is right, there is a reason the 260, and variations of it, are the dominant round in rifle competitions. It has better balistics than a 300 WM, and has one of the highest Balistic coeficients of any bullet available. If you check on a few other boards dedicated to long range hunting and shooting, the 260 Rem is considered to be one of the best rounds going.

I hunt with the .260, and love it. Light recoil and super ballistics. Have no trouble with deer running off.
How many different loads does a person need? I use the 120 gr.rem. accutip. One box will last me 4 years when I elect to take the limit each year. If I shot spots alot, then I would handload.
The only "flop"I see with this cal.,is deer when shot with it....

The longest shot I've made on a deer with a 260 was 568 yards 140 VLD the bullet went threw both shoulders stopped on the hide on the other side deer the (floped) straight down.

I had a hunter 2 yrs. ago come hog hunting. Did not pack ammo with him. We drove 220 miles the first day of his hunt hitting Wal-Mart's and gun shops for no ammo. He wound up using my 300 the next two days and talked about how accurate and how good a killing machine his 260 is. Not much good if you forget your ammo and cannot find any. I tell hunters to bring calibers you can get ammo for. He dropped my 300 and put a dent in a 18 month old Swarovski. I had to relearn a lesson my dad taught me years ago. If they forget ammo and cannot find it make them buy themselves another gun or take them joy riding for their hunt. 260 ammo is still hard to find. What scope are you using to get enough adjustment for windage and elevation for a 120 to 140 gr. out to 1500. I shoot long range using 210 VLD's and have to contend with wind. I don't see it with a 120 gr. bullet. The long range tables I have found for the 260 dont look as good as the 7 mag. You can buy 7 mag. at Wal-Mart. Just my .02

I don't even bother with the 120s.

With a Berger 140gr VLD @ 2822fps it takes 58 MOA to 1500. I use a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22X50 that has 100MOA of elevation travel.

Some of the guys have different optics with less travel and either use a 20MOA scope base or use hold overs with their ranging reticle once they hit the end of their elevation.

I haven't bought factory ammo in a decade. All of mine are hand rolled.

These are just plain facts! I like the 260 there's nothing wrong with it! Like other people say it is hard to find ammo for it. Remington really thought it was gonna be the ultimate whitetail caliber "which it isn't!" They just spent too much on advertising it, and it did not work! it's hard to get people who love their 308's, 7mm 08's, or 243's to switch over. Those are excellent short action calibers. So don't get all bent outta shape! That's what this forum is all about! Opinions!!!!! So before you go getting all pissed off know your facts! And by the way i don't need any of those calibers! I have a 22-6mm that i will let you shoot your 260 at any yardage you want. And after you finish shooting, I can place all my bullets in the exact holes you just shot your flopped 260 with! Trust me if i ever need any money i will look you up!!! Your so called 260 will never match me!

I think the only one upset is you with your multitude of exclamation marks. I offered a challenge to prove the cartridge is not a "flop". Your right about me never matching you if you don't show up.

If Remington "flopped" on their marketing so be it. I don't know anything about their marketing and don't care to know.

My concern is the best round for long range hunting and competition and the .260 is excellent for both.

lol.... good looking rig. I have the Snipers Hide Cup at the end of the month, then a Nilgai hunt in South Texas followed by the TacPro LSSO. Maybe we can put something together for May. The guys on our private range are having private 600 yard steel competitions once a month. I'll see if I can bring you on as a guest if you want to drive that far. You'll need to bring a bench if that is what you are accustomed to. I prefer to lay in the dirt with this .260:
