Great looking dog. Do most Drathaars naturally range pretty close? I've never known anyone that had one. I like the beards though. How do they do in the heat?

Owners ive spoken to, and the breeder told they range fairly close especially compared to gsp's. They have a thick coat and do very well in cold, but like a lab need to be careful working in hot weather.

Congrats on the new pup Jorge, what kennel is she from? Are you planning on running her through the system?

Closer than GSPs, mines no more than 50 to 75 yards in the south texas brush. They don't like warm weather at all for the most part. It's tuff having a furry coat in Texas.

Taken to the kennel? You mean like it, learn to put up with it and except it,house breaking or what?
Mine does not like it but has never been a yelped or whiner. He just accepts it.

Good looking put Jorge. From the size of those feet she is going to be a good size dog.

Yeah, its her 2nd day with us and she just does not like being in her kennel with door closed. She'll go in and eat then get out. She screams bloody murder when i put her in for ahort bits of time, and let her out once she gets quiet and settles down. Been doing more reading and i guess its shear luck that all my labs have loved their kennel. Its almost like the kennel was instinctively their safe haven and wanted to be in it 24/7. Ive only had labs so my points of reference are only in those terms. This is going to be as much fun learning for me as i hope it will be for her. At the beach this afternoon. She already likes the water and went for a quick swim.

Every pup I've had hated the crate at first.
In the past I just put them in and then put up with the screaming. This last pup I took some advise and put the crate/kennel up on two chairs where she could see me at night and I could stick a finger through the door. In a two or three days I moved it to the floor and it's been great ever since.
Never let her out when she's crying and do not giver her attention when she's crying. Wait for a moment of silence even a short one to open the crate.

Thats what i read about not giving in how frustrated and annoyed me or the wife is. I doubt the wife will let me hang it, but thats a good idea. Thanks for the advice. On a side note we took a walk by the creek and man she has a nose. I saw where a coon scurried off her nose was to the ground and pointed, it was really awesome. Then did same thing when she heard an owl across the creek several times. Im really looking forward to bird season.

Very nice.
I had issues with Izzy getting use to the kennel. I ended up putting her by my bed in the kennel with my hand through the wire while I slept. She was calm as long as she knew she wasn't alone. It only took a couple of days.

I guess I've been lucky, the 3 inside dogs I have kennel trained, took to it immediately and and only whined a few minutes at bed time but once dark & quiet, they were asleep. Remember, a tired puppy is the best kind of puppy to have at bedtime.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

So we tried the kennel by my bed last night and not even close to working. Went 2 hours non stop and that was after a 1.5mi mile walk right before bed.
CC im like you ive been very lucky that all my labs took to their kennel immediately. So this is a totally new and difficult challenge.

Put the kennel out of earshot and let her scream until she stops. If that's not an option now is a good time to teach her what hush means. When she's screaming grasp her around the muzzle and command HUSH. This also works with a squirt of water to the face with the command. Stay up with her until she gets it. These methods have worked for me. You'll also have one command down that too many people forget to teach their dog.

Bottle of wine, and a good set of earplugs for the first few nights.

Bottle of wine, and a good set of earplugs for the first few nights. Yep, it's what you are going to have to do. Let pup scream it out a few nights. It will learn it isn't getting out until morning and will stop eventually.

I'm crate training my EP also now. I started mine outside 2 weeks ago in the run first couple days. Then started crate training outside, 30 minute intervals working up to 2 hours. After a week, did 1 night inside. Took her outside every 2 hours. She would wail for about 10 minutes after coming back in. Second night she stayed quiet from 11 pm to 5:30 am. Got lucky I guess. My last 2 pups took about 3 weeks to calm down. Good luck Jorge!

My old GSP was a terror in a crate and till the day he left he was not a fan of it. I slept with shooting ear muffs on the first three nights. Just let the pup cry all night if need be. It'll learn

That was the plan to just let her tire out, but because of circumstances that just isnt possible at the moment. We are in the process of buying a house an we are probably still 30 days from movong in. So in our temporary apt the walls are really really thin. The timing ended up being not on the money. Thats on me, but didnt want to lose my chance on this pup. I was expecting to be taking maddie home closer to end of the month initially.
A friend up the road is going to lend me a hand and allow me to use 1 stall in his 5 kennel set up for a week or so. I dont imagine it should take longer than 10 days for her to get it. so hopefully this is a solution.
