Yep, about time to put the trolling motor on the duck rig. Ready to get after some spring crappie.

Last year I didn't fish much since the lakes were so low, but usually this time of year I like to catch some shad, tie up to a stump with a 12 pack and catch catfish. Running jug lines can be a lot of fun, too.
I want to learn how to get on crappie. They have always been hard to come by for me.

Tryin' to get my pup the elusive (to us) seasoned title. He's good on the marks/steady, getting better on the blinds, failing bad on the walk up/walk out. He just doesn't like to wait to chase the bird that's thrown in front of his face and shot at. Hunt tests are great fun and training for the off season, keeps my old arse active!

I never thought I would enjoy the hunt test game but my girlfriend got into it a couple years ago and now I'm addicted! It is definitely good to keep you training in the off season! My dog needs 3 more Master passes to get his MH. Spring tests are always harder for us because the dogs develop bad habits during the season and it takes a little while to break them!

Running jug lines can be a lot of fun, too. You need to talk to Mohunter, he catches those big blue cats. He throws them all back, I told him I wanted some, so he gave me a mess of catch fish one day, after cleaning them all, I never want to see another catfish again. I like the crappie.

JP, I haven't seen bullfrogs like that since I was a little kid! Close to 40 years ago. We'd hit my grandparents' farm ponds and load up our burlap sacks. Good times... Guy, I can fillet a blue pretty quick and I like the way they eat. Now if I can just get the crappie goin. I have had some luck, but not consistently. And it's a lot easier to sit back with a beer in one hand catfishin' than it is jiggin' for crappie.

Moving water this time, downstream. easy. No nut deep mud. One spot Im catching is exclusively canoe/kayak. Got another spot that you know that could do a john boat thing

JP, I haven't seen bullfrogs like that since I was a little kid! Close to 40 years ago. We'd hit my grandparents' farm ponds and load up our burlap sacks. Good times... The first few years after Hurricane Ike were horrible for frog hunting. I don't think frogs like sitting in 10' of saltwater! When I was in high school, and before Hurricane Ike, (2004-2008) our friends had an old mud boat with the volkswagen engine in it. It wasn't a matter of if it broke down, it was when. We would go about 1 mile down a canal and back and have a cooler full of frogs, Usually between 80-120 depending on size, I like the smaller ones better. We could go every Friday and Saturday night and never run out of frogs to catch. It is not that good again yet but it is definitely getting much better every year. Although I have noticed that we catch a lot more big bull frogs now than we do yellow throats. Maybe they are heartier and can take the slightly brackish water still stuck in most of the marsh around here. I am actually hosting my 3rd Annual Southeast Texas Bullfrog Bash in April. A frog gigging tournament. Heck of a good time!
