We used to feed year round, but stopped during the summers because the hogs chased all the deer off. We penned the first feeder on our current place this season and the results have been great. Penning all but 1 or 2 for hog hunting after the season is over and will start back up the year round feed again.

I don't know if I will ever go to protein. We are only 10 acres and hopefully one day the 10 acres next to us also. I may do a good plot down the road. I wanted to plant an acre next year but don't know if I will have the funds to bring in soil to cover my rocky base

I know of a guy around here that has 20 acres but hes right in the middle of close to 2000 acres of lightly hunted land. he food plots about 10 acres of it and kills a giant every year. you can clearly see his plot from google earth right on the edge of a huge thickly wooded property.

the rocks would be a hindrance though lol

Luckily we have not seen any sign of pigs yet and when talking to my neighbor he said he has never seen one out there.

If you going to feed year round why not go to protein from March to Sepetember? Corn is at max 6% protein, you can buy 15% protein for basically the same price and get better results as for antler growth and it will keep them there just the same as corn.

I only have 10 acres, was told protein would be a waste

I wish my protein was "basically the same" price as my corn

If nothing else it might work as an attractant and help keep deer close to you....it works on one of my places and doesn't on the other lol

We ran 3 feeders this year all spring and summer out of our 8. We literally only had a handful of pictures of deer on them the whole time. It was just turkey and hogs visiting which is why we ran them but it did not help the deer at all. This was north Texas. Now those feeders are not penned we ran so I am sure if we ran a penned one we would see more deer but I don't think it makes a difference except get some pics of deer. The deer come to the feeders just fine starting October.

Year round, but back off to once a day around 8 a.m. Just a couple of seconds run.

Year round here, but back off during the summer months to once per day, alternating feeders to either morning or an evening sling. I have 2 feeders dedicated to hog traps that I leave feeding twice a day to try to control the hog population. Have taken well over 300 hogs in the last couple of years from the two traps plus an average of 40 or so annually from the front porch, riding around or in deer stands, and still don't seem to be gaining a lot of ground on the hog problem.

I have no problem slinging corn 3-4 seconds twice a day in the summer months. It's the protein that gets expensive.

My four feeders run 24/7/365. 2 in the morning, 2 in the evening during the off season. From Sept 1 to Jan 31 all 4 feed 2 time a day. Supplement with bagged Chaffhaye Alfalfa. A bit more expensive than bail alfalfa but its all 100% good stuff. A 50 lbs. bag of Chaffhaye is nutritionally equivalent to 80 – 100 lbs. of bailed hay and provides more protein that a deer's body is capable of utilizing.

We let the feeders run into Feb (or when they run out after season). In March or April we run corn/pea mix for protein until mid summer and then start topping them off with just good clean corn. We do have 5 small plots we plant with winter wheat..... up
